If you are a hockey fan, I don't think you'll ever forget this goal....
That goal being scored 24 years ago today. Is it the biggest goal in the history of Hockey Canada?

It was a big goal, but to me Hendersen's goal in 72 is still the number 1 goal in Canadian Hockey History....and then I think its fair to say Cosby's OT goal in Vancouver could be a close second.
I agree that 72 was number 1 and Crosby goal number 2. This is number 3 then. Hendersen cemented that we are the #1 hockey nation. Crosby's goal re-cememnted it. This goal was close behind though at number 3.
I remember this happening and how excited we were when it did but I watched the slo mo replay from the far end and Hawerchuk totally interfered with the Russian player who had the best chance at catching Mario from behind. Probably wouldn't have counted with today's rules. I'm sure that can be said of a lot of the play in those days, but it was just something I noticed.
If you truly judge the goal scoring situation... where an overtime goal produces an Olympic Gold Medal, the tournament where every country sends a team of its best..Sid's goal should be #1, although the goal wasn't the prettiest. It was best beating the best in the world...(thank God we didn't melt down like Sweden in 2002 to Belarus) Mario's goal was the most "dynamic" in Alan Eagleson's little tourney (we all loved the idea of Gretzky playing with Lemieux--thats about it) ..and Henderson's goal happened in an exhibition series between two countries that historians of the day call the greatest. Maybe I am too young to comprehend the world situation in 1972 to appreciate the magnitude...objectively though I think I summed it up. ...over time Sid's goal will sway the historians opinion ..Lets hope the kid still can turn on more red lights in hockey.

I remember it well!
Not sure Mitchy, but I think Sittler's goal to win the Canada Cup in 76 happened on Sept 15 too. I was at that one with my dad.
