Riders Add Two On Defence
The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today that they have signed import linebacker Darnell Bing and import defensive end Chris Ellis to contracts. Financial details of the signings were not released.
Ellis (6’5 – 260 lbs) was a third round pick (72nd overall) by the Buffalo Bills in the 2008 NFL Draft. The 27-year-old Virginia native spent three seasons in Buffalo, seeing action in 15 games during his time with the Bills. Ellis spent a portion of the 2010 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The former Virginia Tech defensive end had an outstanding collegiate career, compiling 165 tackles, 22 sacks, five forced fumbles, two interceptions and two touchdowns during his time with the Hokies. Ellis was named to the First-team All-ACC team following the 2008 season.

The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that slotback Geroy Simon has signed a contract extension with the team.
“Geroy continues to put up big numbers and is on the verge of becoming the CFL’s all-time leader in reception yardage,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “His durability, work ethic and clutch performances are something I know fans and teammates have come to expect.”
“Our offence thrives when we are able to get the ball in Geroy’s hands,” said head coach Mike Benevides. “He is the kind of player every team wants to have and build around. Geroy will never be outworked or stop challenging himself or his teammates and that’s vital to our success.”
Simon led all Lions receivers in 2011 and ranked second overall in the league with 1,350 yards and eight touchdowns on 84 receptions. Earning a CFL All-Star selection for sixth time in his 13-year career to date, he is now within 66 yards of Milt Stegall’s all-time receiving yardage mark of 15,153.

Random Thoughts
--Are you getting as excited for this Pats-Warriors series as I am. Yes, it could be a short series with one team winning four straight, but I really see this one going six or seven and I see some overtime in the future as well.
--I picked the Warriors to win the East so I can't take the Pats in this series, but as I have said this week, this will be Moose Jaw's toughest test in the Eastern Conference. I can see Brandon knocking off Calgary, but I can't see Kootenay beating Edmonton. I will take the Hat to beat Saskatoon.
--I love the fact SHAW brings us WHL hockey, but at this time of year I wish the cable magnate could give Western Conference play to those in BC and Eastern Conference play to those in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. That would be a win-win for all I think. I'm guessing not many are interested in the Kamloops-Victoria series in these parts, but those in the Okanagan probably wouldn't be that enthralled with watching Moose Jaw-Regina or Saskatoon-Medicine Hat.
--The debate about Jordan Weal winning the WHL MVP award may have taken a big hit when he didn't get a unanimous selection to the Eastern Conference all-star team.
--The Warriors and Pats will both have an emotional fanbase going into this series, but I hope the two respective fanbases are smart enough to leave the fisticuffs and rough play to the ice. Sadly, I know there will be idiots on both sides that will make life miserable for those around them whether they be Moose Jaw or Regina fans.
--I hope the judge in the Graham James case can sleep soundly at night knowing she basically let that scumbag off with a very light slap on the wrist. After seeing the penalty the New Orleans Saints got for "bountygate", I wish NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was the one issuing the sentence.
--If Goodell really wanted to be mean to the Saints, he could have revoked the Tim Tebow trade to the Jets and ordered him to be New Orleans' coach this year.
--What will sell more---Manning Bronco jerseys or Tebow Jets ones. Speaking of which, I wonder what happens to all of those Tebow Denver jerseys that were purchased.
--If the bright lights of New York City don't change Tebow, nothing will----and you know plenty of opportunities will present themselves.
--The St. Louis Blues are the first team in the NHL to hit the 100 point mark. I wonder what the odds of that in Vegas were at the start of the season.
--Is there any doubt that Evgeni Malkin will win the Hart Trophy--symbolic of NHL MVP? While Malkin is almost a certainty to collect some hardware, could Jordan Eberle be the recipient of the Lady Byng Trophy as most gentlemanly player. There are whispers out there that he will be named a finalist.
--I have only won one free coffee when rolling up the rim. I have consumed well over a dozen coffees in that time. DAMN YOU TIMS!!!!
--Why doesn't 7-11 do a similar thing with Big Gulps in the summer time. Actually, maybe its a good job they don't and the same with Slurpees too.
--If former CTV anchor Manfred Joehnck was acquitted on a drunk driving charge, does this mean we could see him back in front of a camera again? I would ask why not?
--Korean skip Ji-Sun Kim obviously doesn't think a lot of Heather Nedohin. After losing to Team Canada at the Worlds on Wednesday morning, Kim said the Jennifer Jones rink is better than the Nedohin foursome and that if the two sides play again, she will win. I am hoping to see another Korea-Canada battle after that.
--Good on Calgary for getting a UFC event. The question now is when will Saskatchewan get one? I am guessing that first event would go at Credit Union Centre.
--I haven't watched too many new episodes of "Two and A Half Men", but after seeing one the other night and what a ridiculous pothead they have turned Jake into that Bud Bundy could kick his ass!
--Some network needs to bring back "Married with Children" and put it on on a nightly basis. That show was second to none.
--I'm not surprised to see Amber Holland break away from her rink, but I thought she would announce her new team before saying she was walking away from her old team.
--I only have eight correct teams in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA basketball tournament that begins tomorrow. Yes, I was a victim of the many upsets that took place. There isn't a lot separating 1 from 16 so I expect a lot of entertaining hoop action this weekend.
--Duncan Keith will likely get suspended for the elbow he threw on Daniel Sedin Wednesday night, but don't you think Sedin should get something for the elbow he threw at Keith a little earlier. It was just as bad although not as blatant.
--The next High Impact Wrestling card in Regina isn't till April 20. Whyyyyyyyy???? Maybe its because that when Rex Roberts will be legally allowed to walk the streets again. There are rumours that he has tagged up with the King. Hopefully the King has more class than to associate himself with someone of his ilk.
--I will never outgrow bubble-wrap!

The Western Hockey League announced today the 2011-12 WHL Eastern Conference First and Second All-Star Teams and the Eastern Conference Finalists for the 2012 WHL Awards. The WHL Player of the Year finalists will be announced on Wednesday, April 18th, 2012. UFC Confirms Calgary Date

The UFC will visit Calgary for the first time on July 21, with shows in Toronto and Montreal planned for later this year.
UFC 149, slated for the Scotiabank Saddledome, will mark the MMA organization's ninth show in Canada and its first in Alberta. More than 200,000 fans attended the first eight with more than $40-million in gate receipts.
Featherweight champion Jose Aldo will defend his 145-pound title in Calgary. UFC president Dana White said it was too early to say who his opponent will be but promised it would be a “sick card.”
White also used his Calgary news conference to announce two other pay-per-view events in Canada in 2012: UFC 152 in Toronto on Sept. 22 and UFC 154 in Montreal at the Bell Centre on Nov. 17.
“You guys are the best fans in the world ... This place has been the mecca for mixed martial arts ever since we set foot in this country,” said White.
The Toronto show — which featherweight Mark (The Machine) Hominick announced via satellite from Toronto — will be either at the Air Canada Centre or Rogers Centre.
Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, shown from Los Angeles where he is rehabbing his knee, made the Montreal announcement on satellite.
St-Pierre, a Montreal native, said he will be able to resume full training in July and hoped he would be ready for November. When healthy, he is due to meet interim champion Carlos Condit next.
“When you get an injury like I had and you're off for a long period of time, the only thing you wish is to come back as fast as possible,” St-Pierre said. “I don't know whether it will be in the U.S. or Canada but I wish and I'm praying that I have a chance to perform in 2012, no matter where it will be.”
It will be the UFC's fifth trip to Montreal and third to Toronto. It has also held two shows in Vancouver but the city has dropped down the pecking order recently due to a disagreement over financial arrangements, including insurance.
“Not in the next two years,” White said when asked if a show was planned for Vancouver.
The UFC is also committing to three pay-per-view shows in Canada in 2013 and 2014, with Toronto and Montreal becoming fixtures on the fight calendar just as Super Bowl weekend, Memorial Day, July 4 and New Year's host annual fight cards in Las Vegas.
“Toronto and Montreal will become staple events on our calendar in 2013 and 2014. And that third Canadian event will rotate among other major Canadian markets,” said Tom Wright, the UFC's director of Canadian operations.
Wright says the plan is to hold a show annually the third week in September in Toronto in 2013 and 2014. The Montreal date will likely be the third Saturday in March — UFC 145 was slated for March 24 this year but was later postponed and moved to Atlanta due to issues with organizing a main event.
The third Canadian date would be in the summer, rotated through different cities with Wright saying Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Quebec City, Vancouver and Winnipeg are among possible venues.
But White included Calgary as part of the annual Canadian circuit for the next two years.
Wright said there were plans to meet with Vancouver city council to see if a way can be paved for future shows.
The UFC set attendance records in both Montreal and Toronto.
Alberta has proved to be an MMA-fertile market with Jason (The Athlete) MacDonald, Nick (The Promise) Ring, Nick (The Quiet Assassin) Penner, Ryan (Big Deal) Jimmo and Mitch Clarke among current UFC fighters based there.
Alberta's Tim (The Thrashing Machine) Hague and Victor Valimaki have also fought in the UFC.
Alberta is also home to several MMA promotions including Edmonton-based Maximum Fighting Championship, Canada's largest, and Aggression MMA.
The July show comes the week after the 100th Calgary Stampede.
“We think this city's going to be alive, it' going to be exciting,” said Wright. “We think if there's a city that we haven't been to in Canada ... Calgary's a fantastic place to bring the UFC.”
Said Red Deer's MacDonald: “It's a dream come true for me.”
He added the Calgary show, if he's on it, would serve as his retirement fight
The WEC, which the UFC has since folded into its parent organization, held an event in June 2010 in Edmonton.
The UFC does not typically announce fights so far into the future but Wright said early word can only help fans.
“It's all about providing visibility to these key dates on our Canadian calendar for our fans,” he said. “You know how our fans travel, particularly across Canada, to all these different events.
“Having consistency of dates and calendars, people want to be able to plan.”
The Calgary show will be overseen by the Calgary Combative Sports Commission.
Wright said tickets will go on sale for the Calgary show in the second week of May, with an announcement on exactly when set for next month.
T-Birds Wins WHL Bantam Draft Lottery

The WHL Bantam Draft lottery was held today at the WHL Office in Calgary on Wednesday, March 21st, to determine the order of the first six selections in the first round of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
The WHL Bantam Draft Lottery involved the six non-playoff teams (Prince Albert, Prince George, Seattle, Lethbridge, Swift Current and Red Deer) from the 2011-12 season.
The Lottery selection process was performed by Dmitri Danilevitch from KPMG. The 2012 WHL Bantam Draft will be held in Calgary, AB, on May 3, 2012.
A Seattle Thunderbirds ball was drawn first in the lottery, giving the Thunderbirds the first overall selection in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. The Prince Albert Raiders, based on their position in the overall 2011-12 WHL Regular Season standings, will receive the second pick in the first round. The Prince George Cougars will select third, followed by the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Swift Current Broncos and Red Deer Rebels, who will draft in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
The order of the second round and all other rounds will be the inverse order of final 2011-12 WHL regular-season standings.

The WHL Bantam Draft lottery was held today at the WHL Office in Calgary on Wednesday, March 21st, to determine the order of the first six selections in the first round of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
The WHL Bantam Draft Lottery involved the six non-playoff teams (Prince Albert, Prince George, Seattle, Lethbridge, Swift Current and Red Deer) from the 2011-12 season.
The Lottery selection process was performed by Dmitri Danilevitch from KPMG. The 2012 WHL Bantam Draft will be held in Calgary, AB, on May 3, 2012.
A Seattle Thunderbirds ball was drawn first in the lottery, giving the Thunderbirds the first overall selection in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
