That Didn't Take Long- Marshall/Berry Out-Miller In

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today that they have released head coach Greg Marshall and offensive coordinator Doug Berry from their contracts. Vice-President of Football Operations Ken Miller will take over the head coaching duties effective immediately.

“This was an extremely difficult decision to make especially when dealing with such quality individuals like Greg and Doug,” stated Riders General Manager Brendan Taman. “As the season has progressed we have become increasingly concerned with the direction the club has been going. We are committed to winning this season and felt this was the best course of action to get the team back on track.”

Greg Marshall was hired as the Riders 28th head coach in modern history on January 5th, 2011. Doug Berry was hired as the team’s offensive coordinator and assistant head coach in February of 2008.

Ken Miller originally joined the Roughriders in 2007 as the team’s offensive coordinator. As head coach of the Riders from 2008-2010, Miller guided the team to three home playoff games and two consecutive Grey Cup appearances.

The greasefire in Saskatchewan made its way from Mike Kelly and the Winnipeg Bluebombers. The rebuilding process has officially commenced today at 3:38pm !

I feel bad for Coach Marshall. He just didn't seem to have a relationship with the guys right from the get-go. I guess we now know why Marshall was never an HC in previous years.

We knew a move was coming, but I didn't expect it to be less than 24 hours after the loss. Hopson steps up to the plate and hits a homer.

Wrong move in my mind. Taman should have been the one to be told his services were no longer needed.

Berry was hired in 2010 not 2008.

No problem with Berry leaving, but I think getting rid of Marshall was a mistake. He never had a full squad to work with.

If Marshall had Fantuz, Bagg, Congi, Chick, Koch and Szarka around, this would never have happened. He didn't have the talent and that falls on Taman. I am guessing his days will be done at the end of the season.

BS move and real bush league. Just a knee jerk move by Miller to save his butt along with Tamans. When we're stiing 2-12 or 2-13 everybody wll be screaming for Millers head. What message are we sending to other coaches thinking of coming here? Look at the cost of this move in slary to Marshall. Firing Berry and Hall would have made more sense. Worst defense and worst offense in the league. They should have brought Miller down as the OC and a presence in the locker room. They should have replaced Hall with Etcheverry or the guy Toronto just released. He built a great defense there. Poorly handled by the guys who created the mess. At the end of the year it's time for a 70 yr old Miller to ride off into the sunset. One half of the Winnipeg connectiopn is gone. Can't be soon enough for me to see the other half gone.

When Marshall signs with Bombers next week to take over Harris's vacancy as Def Line coach, he will grin with back to back landslides over the Riders on Labour day and Banjo Bowl. Plus a bonus of getting paid by the Riders until 2013 as well. Win win for Greg.

Can't understand the support for Marshall, there was clearly none from the players, old and new. The level of alienation between him and the players was extraordinary.

Miller's in a different spot- he's not taking over a successful program like in '08 (no mean feat as Marshall demonstrated), he's taking over a group of individuals who have been lazy, sloppy, and irresponsible for almost half the season. We'll see how much respect the players really have for him now.

True enough. Miller at least gives me some hope for rest of season. Yesterday at this time, I had zero hope.

I thing Marshall lost the team. Maybe he never had them. He was in a tough position following Miller and his past success. Hindsight is 20/20, but if Marshall would of had success, management would have been labelled as geniuses. At the time they wanted to give him a shot that he waited for so long. Maybe now we know why Marshall had been passed up for 5 other head-coaching jobs. His career path may be similiar to that of Richie Hall. Lifetime co-ordinator. I would like to see Danny McManus brought in to be the QB coach, and groomed to be the future OC. He would be a great mentor for Darian. How about bringing Mo Lloyd back? Unemployment may have humbled him and he would have to take a significant pay-cut. Great leader and ferocious tackler. He still knows many of the players and did well playing under Richie. Wouldn't hurt to give him a tryout. Nothing to lose. As for Berry, his bizarre play calling and use of talent finally caught up to him. 3rd and 1 and he runs a shotgun draw? 3rd and 10 with 22 secs left and he calls for a hail-mary into the endzone? Or my personal favourite....using Clermont at WR. Also, trying to make Durant a pocket-passer was just plain dumb. Miller and Durant should sit down together and go through the playbook. Let Durant pick out the plays he feels most comfortable with, and burn the rest.
