Bernie Nicholls Talks About What Hockey Did To His Brain


17 year NHL vet Bernie Nicholls is suing the league because of damage suffered to his brain. Nicholls explains his rationale and tells his story in a fascinating article for the New York Daily News. You can check it out right here.

As bad as these stories are, the thing that bothers me is this is the lifestyle and occupation they chose and they know the hazards of that occupation.

If you read the article you would better understand that back in the day players did not know the long-term consequences of getting their bell rung (or as it is now more properly understood, having multiple brain injuries). It was not the same as getting a broken arm or damaged knees. The NHL did nothing to change the culture with respect to brain injuries, as described in Nicholl's article, even through they had knowledge of the serious consequences of brain injury. This is essentially what the court case is about.

If you play hockey, you are well aware of the issues at hand, and nobody put a gun to your heads to play.

Not saying this is not an issue, but this isn't the fix.
