Madani: Chris Jones And Riders Extend Contract

The Saskatchewan Roughriders hope to have stability atop their football front office, but even in their latest move with Chris Jones there is a caveat.

CFL sources tell Sportsnet that Jones and the Riders have come to an agreement on a contract extension that will keep the head coach and GM in Regina. Sources say there is, however, an out clause in the deal that will allow Jones to accept and leave for jobs in either the NFL or NCAA.

It was last month that Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports reported Jones being on the radar of some NFL teams in their coaching search. A CFL source tells Sportsnet that Jones was recently speaking to at least one American College football program about a defensive coordinator position south of the border.

Jones took over in Saskatchewan after leading Edmonton to a Grey Cup title in 2015. The Riders reached the East Division Final in 2017, then hosted the west semifinal last season — losing to Winnipeg without starter Zach Collaros healthy.

It is believed that Jones is among many CFL coaches and front office types who are quite unhappy with the new “staff cap” that has been implemented for the 2019 season, limiting the spending for those in football operations. He had to inform many in Saskatchewan that they were forced to take pay cuts and, in the aftermath of it, assistant GM John Murphy left. Many in league circles believe Murphy will resurface with the Toronto Argonauts for the coming season.

A window is there for him to go south when the opportunity presents itself.

Translation: Enjoy one last year of Chris Jones folks! He gone!

If Murphy didn't take a pay cut, did O'Day? Is that the only reason he is still here?

Murphy didn't have near the success here that he had in Calgary with John Hufnagel holding his hand. Toronto is welcome to him.

Jones' contract will be null and void when someone from the south calls him.
