Women's Basketball (CIS Ranking: No. 3) – The Cougars (13-1) have now won eight straight Canada West games after collecting 86-55 and 87-42 road wins over the University of Manitoba last weekend in Winnipeg. The two victories not only clinched a postseason berth, but also a top-four finish in the division for the Cougars which gives them a first-round bye in the playoffs. The Cougars are back at home this weekend with games against Victoria (7-9) on Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. both nights.
Men's Basketball – The Cougars fell behind on both Friday and Saturday at Manitoba and weren't able to complete the comebacks in either game, ending up with 89-82 and 77-63 losses to the Bisons. Now in sixth place in the Pioneer Division standings, the Cougars (8-6) have a pair of critical Canada West games this Friday and Saturday against Victoria, which comes into the weekend just outside of the playoff picture at 7-9. Both games have 8 p.m. scheduled starts at the CKHS.
Men's Hockey – The Cougars fell 5-3 and 7-3 to Mount Royal last weekend in Calgary despite a three-goal weekend from Christian Magnus. They'll now prepare for a home series against UBC this weekend, needing two wins over the Thunderbirds to avoid being mathematically eliminated from the playoff race. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday at The Co-operators Centre.
Women's Hockey (CIS Ranking: No. 10) – With two wins over Mount Royal last weekend the Cougars (11-8-4-1) clinched a playoff berth, pulled into a tie for second place in Canada West with Alberta, and broke into the CIS Top Ten for the first time this season. Just one point back of first-place UBC, the Cougars will match up against the Thunderbirds for a pair of games this weekend in Vancouver. Game time is set for 9 p.m. CST both Friday and Saturday.
Women's Volleyball – The Cougars took a set off No. 4-ranked Alberta in their final home match of the season on Saturday, but lost twice to a strong Pandas squad to fall to 1-19 on the season. Veteran outside hitter Tori Glynn became the sixth Cougar to hit 700 career kills in the rally point era and now needs just three more to pass Meagan Onstad for fifth in U of R history and 24 more to pass Samantha Lawrek for fourth. The Cougars are in action this weekend at MacEwan on Friday and Saturday.
Men's Volleyball – The Cougars were defeated twice by unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Alberta last weekend in their final two home matches of the 2015-16 schedule – and the last matches at the CKHS for fifth-year players Andre Borgeaud, Jacques Borgeaud, and Matthew Lueck. The Cougars will finish off the season with four road matches over the next three weekends, starting with this Friday and Saturday in Edmonton at MacEwan.
Track & Field – Rookie Reagan Fedak scored a first-place finish for the Cougars in the weight throw at the Knights of Columbus Indoor Games over the weekend in Saskatoon, registering throws of 15.08 metres on both her fifth and sixth attempts to secure the win. The Cougars sent only a small contingent of athletes to Saskatoon, but are expected to field a full squad this weekend at the Bison Classic in Winnipeg.
Swimming – The men's and women's teams stayed home to compete in the Optimist Prairie Cup and combined to set four school records – Eva Madar in the 50-metre butterfly (27.98 s) and 200-metre butterfly (2:16.56), Noah Choboter in the 50-metre backstroke (25.69 s), and Chris Myers in the 50-metre breaststroke (29.24 s). Myers' time in the 50 breast also qualified him for the CIS Championships, which will be held in Quebec City from Feb. 26 to Feb. 28.
Wrestling (Women's CIS Ranking: No. 3 / Men's CIS Ranking: No. 8) – The men's team travelled to Abbotsford, B.C. last weekend to compete in the Cascades Classic at the University of the Fraser Valley. Gaelan Malloy and Parker Berard both won their weight classes, helping the Cougars to a second-place finish in the team standings. Waylon Decoteau added a second-place finish for the U of R. Both the men's and women's teams will now prepare for the Canada West Championships coming up on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13 in Winnipeg.
