Jesse, Jesse, Jesse
Those who love the CFL and hate the NFL will tell you the NFL is boring. Those who say that should be forced to watch the Eskimos-Bombers game repeatedly. Yes, the weather conditions affected both teams, but Winnipeg and Edmonton put one on that won't be repeated on ESPN Classic anytime soon.
The game featured 25 punts--17 in the first half alone. It ended when Alexis Serna missed a potential game tying 47 yard field goal giving Edmonton a 19-16 win.
The big story in this game was Jesse Lumsden. If you had he wouldn't last the first quarter in the how long till he gets injured pool, then you are a winner. Lumsden re-injured his surgically repaired shoulder after getting hit on a screen pass by Siddeeq Shabazz. It looked quite painful as doctors tried to get the shoulder back into the socket. The severity of the injury is not known, but it looks as if once again Lumsden will miss a significant amount of time.
Lumsden is fast becoming the Eric Lindros of the CFL. He's a guy that has MVP talent, but he never gets the chance to display it consistently because of injury. This shouldn't surprise anyone, its just too bad for the Eskimos that he didn't last one quarter.
Two other things from this game. As much as I like Richie Hall, I absolutely hate his decision and the decision of any coach NFL or CFL including Ken Miller to call a timeout just as the kicker is about to do his thing. Hall did that last night and it worked perfectly as Alexis Serna made the first field goal and missed the second. I'm one of those guys that thinks taking that approach at the end of the game is bush. Its like calling for the illegal stick measurement in the last two minutes. Yes, its in the rule book, but I don't like it and I think calling it makes you look bad. Speaking of Serna, could the Bombers not have found another kicker in the off-season to replace this guy. Serna had Doug Berry tearing his hair out last year, and now Mike Kelly knows how he feels---albeit Mike has no hair to pull out.
Its only taken me three games to question the CFL command center and what they are seeing. In the 4th quarter, Ricky Ray hit Maurice Mann with a pass at the 12 yard line. Mann dove to catch the ball and with no Bomber touching him, he went into the endzone. The Bombers threw the challenge flag to see if Mann had caught the ball. If the refs didn't see a Winnipeg player touch Mann on the original play, surely they must have seen it in Toronto on the replay. NOPE!!! They said he was down by contact. ???????? That's pretty hard when there was no contact.
Back to Lumsden for one more point. While I'm not suggesting the team is trying to rush him back, this should show that Wes Cates should not play until it is absolutely certain that he is 100 percent. Nothing against Hugh Charles, but the Riders need number 20 at his best to be successful. He can't be at his best if he gets back in the lineup at less than 100 percent and re-injures that shoulder.

I find the comments of Jason Clermont to be very interesting. He is claiming this game has no special significance to it, but how can it not. Jason was told he was no longer needed by the team that he spent the first seven years of his CFL career with. He has to be coming in with a chip on his shoulder wanting to show Wally Buono that he still has a lot of good football in front of him. I am expecting Clermont to have a big night tonight. Here's hoping J-C lets his true feelings out after the game---especially if the Riders should come out with the two points.
I'm expecting a very good football team between the Lions and Riders tonight. Its one that could come right down to the last play. These teams respect one another, but they don't like one another. Both teams have been forced to fill some big holes and both teams still have some marquee players. While you could say it in just about every game, I think the play of the o-line will determine who wins this one. Both teams have a different look to them on the o-line meaning whatever team can protect its quarterback the best will likely walk off the field a winner.
I just saw the forecast for tonight. It must be time for a Rider home game because rain is scheduled.

I had to laugh at Jamie Nye on Thursday morning. My replacement at CJME(who is doing a damn good job) showed he's still a rookie on the Rider beat while converging with the rest of the media horde at the stadium. Jamie was in a state of disbelief when finding out that pizza and donuts are on the menu on pregame press conference day. ROOKIE!!!!! Maybe they didn't have that luxury in Edmonton when he was there. It didn't take him long to get right in there with everyone else though. By the way, congrats to Jamie for getting top billing on the sports show which has a new name.

The talk has started over the invites to Canada's mens hockey camp for the 2010 Olympics. Players like Spezza, Stamkos, Savard and Price were left off while guys like Cleary, Robidas, Marc Staal and Andy MacDonald were given invites. You can't argue with a lot of the guys on the list but as is the case anytime you do this, you do question some of the guys on it and some who are left off. At least that Crosby kid got an invite.

CFL Fines Bruce
Toronto, ON (July 2, 2009) - The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today that it has fined Toronto Argonaut Arland Bruce III an undisclosed amount for his excessive actions following a touchdown in the first quarter of the Toronto Argonauts - Hamilton Tiger-Cats game on July 1st, 2009.
Bruce III was also assessed two objectionable conduct penalties following the incident during the game.

CFL Predictions
I guess I am one night late in getting these done since the season has already started, but here goes.
EASTERN DIVISION
1. Montreal
There is no reason to suggest the Alouettes won't be as strong as they were last year or the years before that. Anthony Calvillo shows no signs of slowing down and he may have the best overall unit to work with. Avon Cobourne may not get the headlines, but he is just as effective as guys like Jamel Richardson and Ben Cahoon. Scott Flory and Brian Chiu anchor what could be the best offensive line in the CFL. Add to that the Alouettes are the only strong team in a weak division and one has to believe the Eastern final will once again be contested at Stade Olympique.
2. Hamilton
I realize they put in a stinker last night, but this team has to get it better doesn't it?? Quinton Porter looked good last year when he was in there and a young team that gained valuable experience last year should be able to see that experience pay dividends this year. If Hamilton can't be a playoff team this year, one has to wonder what is next for them.
3. Toronto
I just can't see Bart Andrus catching the same lightning in a bottle that Marc Trestman caught last year. Andrus just doesn't have the talent in Toronto that Trestman has in Montreal. Kerry Joseph needs to get back to his 2007 MOP form and a defence that has been totally rebuilt will need some time to get on the same page and work cohesively as one.
4. Winnipeg
I truly believe the Bombers are the worst team in the CFL. There are just too many question marks surrounding this team with Mike Kelly being the biggest one of all. The new coach has done some interesting things and is seemingly more concerned with how to grab a headline by doing something controversial than having his team ready for the season ahead.
WESTERN CONFERENCE
1. Calgary
Yes, they are a cocky bunch, but they can back it up. There is no reason to think Henry Burris and company can't follow up on their Grey Cup championship last year by winning another one in front of their home fans. They have the best team on paper. However as I said last year, if this group of individuals start sniping at one another which could happen, there is a potential for a major, major implosion.
2. Saskatchewan
OK, maybe I have my green coloured glasses on. A lot of people across the country and some inside Saskatchewan are picking the Riders to finish last in the division because of their off-season losses. They lost a lot going into 2008, and lost a lot as the season wore on, but they still found a way to win 12 games. I don't think this team can win 12 games again this season, but I believe Coach Ken Miller has them on the right set of mind. Darian Durant will be just fine as quarterback as he distributes the ball to the many weapons he has.
3. Edmonton
The Eskimos are a much better team under Richie Hall and they possess arguably the best quarterback in the CFL in Ricky Ray. I'm not sold on Edmonton's receivers after Kamau Petersen and they will have no running game if Jesse Lumsden isn't healthy. Mo Lloyd helps that defence, but I think this team has one year of growing that must be done under Hall before it starts to re-assume itself as a CFL heavyweight.
4. BC
Yes, Wally Buono is the best coach in the CFL, but even good coaches can have tough seasons. No Wake, no Clermont, no Logan, no Williams, etc. etc. etc. I don't see the Lions making the West playoffs, but I could see them crossing over.
That's how I see it. Of course, I picked the home teams in last nite's CFL play so if you want to take that into account, it means you will see Winnipeg playing BC on Grey Cup Sunday. OK, I don't see that happening, but I do foresee what we saw last night in Calgary being replayed in November. Many things will happen before that game though so lets see how things transpire over the next few months.

Hockey Canada Releases Mens Camp Invites
46 players are getting an invite to Canada's Olympic hockey camp which goes in Calgary in late August. Of the 46, five are goalies, 16 are defencemen and 25 are forwards. Here's the story with the list of invitees. Let the debate begin Canada!!

CFL Season Starts/NHL FA Frenzy/Dany Heatley
Before I start talking about the douchebag named Dany Heatley, lets talk about opening night in the CFL and one has to wonder just when and how the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are going to turn things around.
The Ti-Cats looked absolutely putrid yet again as they lost 30-17 to the Argonauts. This game was basically over after 15 minutes as Toronto went down the field on their first three possessions and scored touchdowns. Coming off to back to back three win seasons, the Ti-Cats have to get on a roll and get on one immediately. They had a great chance to do so against a Toronto team that I'm sure is still trying to find its identity under new coach Bart Andrus and all they do is come out and in front of their home crowd soil the linen again. How much more can supporters of this team take???? One game in and the pressure is already on Marcel Bellefeuille!
It didn't take long for Rob Murphy to get his act going in Toronto as he got into a fight on the first drive of the night. I also think Commissioner Cohon should step in right now and end these foolish TD celebrations. Arland Bruce the Third getting not one, but two penalties after taking off his helmet and jersey and laying on the turf and then saying he was doing it in respect of Michael Jackson. OK!!!!!!
In Calgary, the Alouettes get a solace of revenge for what happened on Grey Cup Sunday as they go into McMahon Stadium and beat the Stampeders 40-27. Like Hamilton, Calgary got off to a terrible start at home as they were down 20-0, but Calgary came all the way back and at one point in the 4th quarter drew to a tie. In the end though, Montreal's defence came up big as Henry Burris was intercepted in the endzone and Chip Cox returned a Burris fumble for a TD giving the Alouettes the victory. I have to admit I was surprised by that result. I also have to say I am in mid-season form when it comes to picks as two games into the 2009 season, I am 0-2. I'm glad I don't play Pro-Line on CFL games. I guess this means Winnipeg and BC will win the other two games this weekend. Sorry Ken!!

Montreal GM Bob Gainey had to make a splash after failing to land Vinnie Lecavalier in a trade and I would say he did so. Gainey loses Mike Komisarek to Toronto, but they add Mike Camalleri, Brian Gionta, Jaroslav Spacek and Hal Gill. Add that to Scott Gomez and "Les Bleu, Blanc et Rouge"are going to look a lot different. Gainey told everyone at the end of the day they won't pursue Saku Koivu meaning his days in Montreal appear to be over. It looks like he might be joining his brother Mikko in Minnesota.
I was surprised to see Nikolai Khabibulin end up in Edmonton. I had just heard the TSN panel discuss how Khabibulin would likely want to stay with a contender and that they wouldn't be surprised to see the Hawks move Cristobal Huet and stay with Khabibulin. Perhaps Khabibulin knew he wouldn't be winning another Stanley Cup in Chicago after the Hawks signed Marian Hossa. After all, we have seen what has happened to Hossa in the last two seasons. How will Marian feel if the Hawks get to the finals and lose next year??? The only thing about Khabibulin that scares me is his age. After all, as fellow Oiler fan and good man Jayson Hajdu says, you have to wonder about someone when you can track his career back to the Winnipeg Jets!!! Good point Jay!!! This move does not end my stance that the team should make a trade for Josh Harding.

Speaking of the Oilers and trades, it looks ---at least at the time of writing this--that Dany Heatley is not going to Edmonton and I say GOOD!!!
In fact after seeing what has transpired over the past 24 hours, I hope this piece of crap goes to the KHL and I hope Hockey Canada realizes what an ass he is and forgets to deliver his invite for the Olympic team. This guy may never put on an Oiler sweater and he may surpass Chris Pronger as most hated Oiler.
I really didn't realize Heatley was such a jerk until the stories came out after his desire to leave Ottawa was known. Now everyone can see what a knobbus maximus this guy is. How can you ask for a trade, get one and then say no to it??!! Guess what Dany, you aren't going to the Rangers now that they have Gaborik. I'm guessing the Sharks and Kings having seen what's transpired don't really want you and I hope Steve Tambellini wakes up and realizes you are not what Edmonton needs. If you want to trade Cogliano, Penner and Smid for a legitimate sniper, call Tampa and get Vinnie, call Atlanta and get Kovalchuk, throw some bucks Nik Antropov's way if you want to or see how much Mikael Samuelsson wants but tell Heatley to simply go you know where. It will sure be interesting if this trade does go through. If Heatley is in Edmonton. I could see fans at Rexall booing this clown when he plays for their team. What a scene that would be on opening night!

As the calendar hits July, one has to start looking at the Blue Jays and one has to think that perhaps the biggest part of their schedule begins Friday. Toronto will start a 10 game road trip with stops in New York, Tampa and Baltimore. Cito's crew are 7 back of the Red Sox going into Thursday's play and they are only 4 1/2 out of the wild-card spot. When you look at Toronto's record, you see they are a glaring four games under 500 against their AL East rivals which is something that must change in the next 10 games against divisional rivals. This stretch will likely tell us if Toronto is a buyer or seller down the stretch. If its the latter, expect the trade Roy Halladay chant to start up again. Toronto would be simply foolish to trade Halladay or to let him get away in free agency. It just can't happen. Trade Wells or Rios or Overbay if you want, but don't touch the Doc.

It was revealed yesterday that later this month, people across the country can vote on whether Darren Dutschyshen and Jennifer Hedger will go to either Watrous or Wynyard. Who ya got???? Whatever it is, the loser can be rest assured they won't get a visit from "The Score's" Cabbie. Speaking of "The Score", I thought Hardcore Sports Radio was a joke before, but its become even more of one now with Gabe Morency in the chair. Who does this guy think he is??? I don't know who is more annoying...Morency or his side-kick Cam Stewart. TV hell would have to be having these guys on all the time with no way of changing the channel.

Top Canadian Sporting Moments
As the country turns 142 years old today, what better time to think about the great sporting moments Canada has produced. There have been many of them, but what tops the list. For what its worth, here' s mine.
1. Paul Henderson's goal in 1972.
2. Winning mens hockey gold at Salt Lake City
3. Terry Fox's marathon of hope. (I consider this to be a sporting moment)
4. The Jays winning their first World Series
5. Mario Lemieux's goal giving Canada the Canada Cup
