Saskatchewan Roughrider Board of Director Chairman Roger Brandvold issued the following statement regarding the recently proposed stadium project:
We look forward to working diligently with all levels of government, and our partners with the objective of creating a new home for the football club. Almost all other clubs in the league are engaged in planning or have already implemented significant projects or major renovations to their facilities.
We are very supportive and encouraged with the work and planning the City of Regina has put into this project. We also have confidence the provincial government shares this vision of a world class stadium in the province.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders and the entire CFL is a growing entity and this stadium is essential to providing the world-class amenities our fans deserve.
As a tenant of this proposed project, we understand and embrace the various other sporting groups and concerts that will benefit from a new stadium.
With over 120 full-time and 40 part-time staff currently working in the Rider organization, it has become increasingly difficult to continue to grow as a club with our facilities. A recent economic impact study showed an estimated $73 million dollars is generated in the province throughout the Roughriders home games. Another $55-60 million will be generated as the province gets ready to host the 101st Grey Cup in 2013.
We are excited to seeing this dream become a reality for all of our stakeholders, none more important than our amazing fans who continue to support this club.

Weekend Thoughts
--Another gray, wet miserable weekend. After the winter we had, I shouldn't complain, but CMON!
--The CFL draft is over and once again all eight teams should be ashamed of themselves. Someone should have taken McMaster quarterback Kyle Quinlan. I guarantee you this guy is better than some stiffs that will show up at CFL camps.
--It would appear from the talk surrounding the guy that the Riders perhaps stole receiver Ismael Bamba and that if all goes right he could play a big role in the 2012 edition.
--Is it just me or did the LA Kings look better in their second round sweep of St. Louis than they did in their first round win over Vancouver?
--What happened to the Flyers energy and zip. They have not had this in their series against the Devils.
--Those that have had enough of Bob Cole in the booth certainly gained a lot more ammunition after Game 4 of the Devils-Philly series. Does Bob know who got the empty netter yet?
--All cities have them, but the people who decided it would be a good idea to vandalize city square downtown are people we really don't need to associate with. I hope those responsible are happy with themselves and that they get caught and prosecuted.
--Congrats to Miami linebacker Cam Wake for signing a 4 year, 49 million dollar deal with the Dolphins. I am guessing that makes him the highest paid ex CFL'er in the NFL.
--What exactly was that woman doing at the Lakers-Nuggets game?
--Jack Keaton's beef ribs are outstanding!
--I was at an event on the weekend where it was once again proven that white men can't dance and that alcohol does NOT make them a better dancer.
--I sincerely hope we have not seen the last of Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera. He should not go out the way he did.
--Why is it we have the NFL Network, the NHL Network, NBA TV, the Golf Channel and yet we don't have MLB TV. I know Vanstone wants his ESPN beamed into Canadian homes as do I, but can we not get MLB TV.
--Floyd Mayweather came out for his fight Saturday night with 50 Cent, Triple H and Justin Bieber all in his entourage. Bieber?????? WTF????
--I'm not suggesting he was on them, but has anyone bothered to see if Junior Seau may have been on steroids and that's what caused him to do what he did. Everyone is so focussed on concussions these days that we seem to be forgetting other things.
--Hockey has to change its delay of game penalty. If a player clears it out, instead of the two minutes just treat it like icing and that the team who puts the puck over the boards can't change
--I didn't have a problem with Ovechkin's hit on Girardi Saturday or Giroux's hit on Zubrus last night. I do have a problem with this hit at the World Championships though...
--The Saturday Night Live with Eli Manning was OK, but Peyton is funnier.
--My good buddy Tom Pura in Grande Prairie, Alberta tweeted this one over the weekend so I gotta give it credit.

Evraz Place Enters The Equation

The City of Regina is looking to build a modern, open-air stadium at Evraz Place officials told reporters Friday morning during an update on the Regina Revitalization Initiative.The plan also includes redeveloping 17.5 of the 33 acres on the current CP rail yards on Dewdney Avenue for commercial, residential and retail space as well as building a new residential area on the site of the current Mosaic Stadium.Public investment in the project would be $278.2 million for the stadium, $45.7 million for the CP land and $24.4 to build a new neighbourhood where Mosaic Stadium now stands. That comes to a total of $348.3 million which the city hopes will leverage private investment to make it a $1 billion project overall.The plans differs from a previous vision released by Mayor Pat Fiacco which would have seen a new stadium built on the CP lands.

Riders Draft 3 Besides Heenan
Round 2 - 12 h overall LB Sam Hurl Calgary
Round 5 - 35 th overall LB Kevin Regimbald-Gagne Sherbrooke
Round 6 - 39th overall WR Ismael Bamba Sherbrooke
The Roughriders altered their draft order when they completed a trade with the Calgary Stampeders. The Riders receive Calgary's 2nd round (12th)overall selection and 5th round (35
th overall) while the Stampeders will receive Saskatchewan's 3rd round (15th overall) and a second round pick in the 2013 CFL Canadian Draft.
With their second round selection (12th overall), the Riders selected University of Calgary linebacker Sam Hurl. Hurl has twice been named the Canada West Defensive Player of the Year. Hurl led the Dino's last season with 97 defensive tackles and four tackles for a loss.
In the 5th round (35th overall), the Riders selected linebacker Kevin Regimbald-Gagne from Sherbrooke. Regimbald-Gagne was named a 1st Team CIS All-Canadian and tallied 40 defensive tackles last season for Sherbrooke. He was also named to the RSEQ all-star team in each of the past two seasons.
With the Riders final pick in the sixth round (39th overall), the Riders selected receiver Ismael Bamba from Sherbrooke. Bamba was one of the top receivers in the CIS after transferring from the University of North Dakota.

Rider president, CEO (and damn good guy) Jim Hopson announced at the U of S Dogs breakfast this morning that Ben Heenan will be the number one selection at the CFL draft this afternoon. There ya go. Edmonton you are on the clock.
Now to "This and That'
--Thank you to the Rangers and Capitals for giving us our first Stanley Cup marathon that really still ended at a decent time. I was able to see the goal and then still see Kelsey Morrison give the forecast on Global News during the 10 o'clock cast so all was good. Of course its a good job that this game wasn't on the West Coast otherwise it would be about 1 or 130 before it ended. I have no problems with lengthy overtimes in the Stanley Cup playoffs and I scoff at those that believe the game should go to a shootout if its not over after one OT. Those thoughts to me are utterly ridiculous. Yes, it becomes a survival of the fittest, but isn't that what you want.
--Dear CBC, we got the idea that Braden Holtby's parents were in the stands last night. We did not need to see them however many times you showed them. Please do not repeat this in Game 4. Talk about overkill
--Dear A & W. Please get a new advertising agency and stop the lame, lame and can I say it again lame ads that you keep trotting out there. Thank you! I just keep wanting the Root Bear to crash through the set and beat those singing idiots to within an inch of their life.
--Dear Boston Pizza. Once the "Terry Peters--All Meat Wings" ad has come to an end. Do not give us a sequel.
--Great news from Don Narcisse this morning. You may remember a while ago Narco went to the Conexus Arts Center to help out Rob Vanstone and his Leader Post Raise-a-Reader collectible show. He lost his Hall of Fame ring and his Plaza of Honor ring and the word went out to help him find them. Narcisse on Facebook this morning told the world he has found the rings.
--I don't know if you heard Regina mayor Pat Fiacco on "Sportscage" yesterday, but he delivered one of his most passionate speeches in favour of the new entertainment complex and the inner city housing that will go with it. Rod has the transcript of what was said on his blog (like you don't already know that) so I won't bother putting it on here. Fiacco answered what Rod and I asked him and then some. There are still some questions I have and at some point I'm sure Fiacco will answer them either in a public forum or in a one-on-one conversation. I am disappointed that this project seems to be stuck in the mud and that we are seemingly no further along than we were when the initiative was first announced. I want to see dignitaries with shovels in hand breaking ground somewhere and I want to see that soon. I also just keep wondering why there are so many opposed to this when they can't see the overall good this will do for the city. This isn't a Riders thing, its a city thing and a provincial thing. People in Moose Jaw cried about Mosaic Place for how long and look at the impact it has had in Moose Jaw in its first year. That will happen here. That's a guarantee.
--Youtube has banned this video featuring Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover girl Kate Upton. Why? Oh yes, thank you Kate Upton on behalf of men everywhere....
--The news of Junior Seau's death shocks me. I don't think I've ever seen a better, more intense linebacker than Seau with the exception of Mike Singletary. Yes, Ray Lewis is also in that discussion. His death of course only has some wondering whether or not it is concussion related. Seau never missed any games or was on an injury list with a concussion, but you can't tell me that he never got his head rattled around. I still for the life of me will never understand what drives a person to want to take his own life. That is just so sad.
--I know the WHL bantam draft is big for the teams, but I have a hard time getting excited for it when the players don't become members of the team for a couple of years. Its not like the CFL draft or the NFL, NHL or NBA draft when the guy is on the team right away and is making an impact. That being said, I will watch to see who the future of the Pats, Warriors and other teams are.
--Speaking of the U of S, the Riders new jerseys remind me of the Husky unis.
--It was full out geekdom in Regina this week when word came out that an Apple store was coming to the Cornwall Centre. If an Apple Store did come here, I can only imagine the scene outside the store before it opened for the first time.
--I had to pick up my daughter from school last week. I got there a couple of minutes early and then proceeded to see at least seven cars go ripping down the street ignorant of the fact they were going through a school zone at way more than 40. I know Regina police can't be at every school zone cracking down on this, but I would much rather see them doing that --especially when kids are going and getting out--instead of having speed traps set up on the Ring Road like they did a couple of weekends ago,
--The city puts out signs telling people to keep their cars off the street so they can do street cleaning. There is plenty of advance notice, but some people just refuse to do so. That bothers me as well---especially when the driveway is empty and the car is on the street. Is it that tough to move your car. Apparently, the answer is yes.
--Considering the state of the Blue Jays bullpen, I will say Albert Pujols hits his first homer of the year against Toronto this weekend.
