Draftkings CFL Picks For Week 1

As you know by now, the CFL has partnered with DraftKings in what should be a huge win for the league. Engaging a younger demographic, and a football crazed fan-base by entering the world of daily fantasy sports should do nothing but have more viewers who are checking out their investment and create more fans. Who should you take in Week 1? Here's who I have!

First off, you may be asking how exactly will the game be scored. Wonder no more....

Offensive players will accumulate points as follows:

Passing TD = +4PTs
25 Passing Yards = +1PT (+0.04PT/ per yard is awarded)
300+ Yard Passing Game = +3PTs
Interception = -1PT
10 Rushing Yards = +1PT (+0.1PT per yard is awarded)
Rushing TD = +6PTs
100+ Yard Rushing Game = +3PTs
10 Receiving Yards = +1PT (+0.1PT per yard is awarded)
Reception = +1PT
Receiving TD = +6PTs
100+ Yard Receiving Game = +3PTs
Punt/Kickoff/FG Return for TD = +6PTs
20 Punt/Kickoff/FG Return Yards = +1PT (+0.05PT per yard is awarded)
Fumble Lost = -1PT
2 Point Conversion (Pass, Run, or Catch) = +2PTs

Defense/Special Teams will accumulate points as follows:
Sack = +1PT
Interception = +2PTs
Fumble Recovery = +2PTs
Rouge Scored = +1PTs
Kickoff Return TD = +6PTs
Punt Return TD = +6PTs
FG Return TD = +6PTs
Interception Return TD = +6PTs
Fumble Recovery TD = +6PTs
Blocked Punt or FG TD = +6PTs
Safety = +2PTs
0 Points Allowed = +10PTs
1-6 Points Allowed = +7PTs
7-13 Points Allowed = +4PTs
14-20 Points Allowed = +1PT
21-27 Points Allowed = 0PTs
28-34 Points Allowed = -1PT
35+ Points Allowed = -4PTs

The following scoring plays will result in Points Allowed (PA) by your Defense/Special Teams (DST):

Rushing TDs, Passing TDs, Punt Return TDs, Kick Return TDs, FG Return TDs and Blocked Punt/FG TDs
2pt conversions
Extra-points
Field-goals
Rouges

Now that you know how the game is scored, here is who I am taking for Week 1. As you will see, I am going with established guys and not newcomers as very little is known about them.

QUARTERBACK - BO LEVI MITCHELL  $9500

This is a bargain as far as I am concerned. BLM is the 5th best quarterback to take this week according to the DK price-setters. I think Bo Levi torches the Lions for 300 yards and at least 2 TD's.

RUNNING BACK - JEROME MESSAM  $6700

The big bruiser is cheaper than Andrew Harris, Jeremiah Johnson, CJ Gable and Tyrell Sutton. Yes, Messam only had 2 rushing touchdowns last year, but I would think Calgary will pound away at the BC defence and if they get inside the 5, it will be the Messam show.

WIDE RECEIVERS - MARQUAY MCDANIEL $7400
                                   - WESTON DRESSLER $7100

In an 8 team league, stacking players from one team is a good investment if that team can come through with points. McDaniel should be Bo Levi's favourite target seeing Eric Rogers is no longer around, so here's hoping these two can hook up for at least one score if not more in opening week action against the Lions.

As for Dressler, I am thinking Drew Willy will want to make an impact with one of his off-season acquisitions quite quickly. We all know in Saskatchewan what Dressler can do. It may be one of those picks where I go with my heart instead of my head, but I think WD has a nice start to the season at home.

FLEX - DURON CARTER $8000
           -ANDY FANTUZ  $5500

One has to think Duron Carter is in for a big year in Montreal. We all know this guy can play and he certainly has the pedigree. I would have to think Carter will get in behind that Winnipeg secondary for a score and he should be able to get 100 yards receiving,

As for Fantuz, he is a guy the Ti-Cats look to in the red zone. It is a gamble because he is getting the ball from Jeremiah Masoli and not Zach Collaros, but I'll roll the dice on Fantuz and hope for the best on this one which is my biggest gamble on the board for Week 1.

DEFENCE - ARGOS $4600

I think the Argos want to make their first game at BMO Field one to remember for their fan-base. I think they come out flying with guys like Ricky Foley, Jermaine Gabriel and Brandon Isaac making life difficult for Masoli. Let's not forget Rich Stubler is Toronto's defensive co-ordinator now and his defences are usually pretty solid.

That's who I am going with. Get in there and join me and if you do, good luck. 2000 goes to the winner in the $3 play I am making and if you can finish in the top 2300, you'll double your money.  There is also a free contest as well so you have nothing to lose

Any idea as to why kickers aren't offered? You have kickers in NFL games.

No clue. Sorry

I'm not sure about Messam. I like the Fantuz pick though.

And please explain to your vast audience what makes you such an expert on this?

I remember you saying this had to be done on RP's blog sometime ago and you got roasted for it. HA HA HA!! It shows what the local yokels know.

Scruffy - This new feature by the CFL is going to make watching the games a lot more interesting. Also, it gives all of us fans something more to talk about. In regards to your choices. We agree on 4 of the 7 possibilities. The one I think you missed out on was Chad Owens. With the Tiger-Cats opening up at BMO Field, I think Owens will want to prove to the Argos that he has plenty left in the tank. With both him and speedy B returning kicks a lot of trick plays could be done on returns to help increase his point total.

It is odd why kickers wouldn't be included. Don't slight the mighty kicker!!

Curtis:

Any return TD's Banks scores would go under TiCats defence/special teams. I don't disagree on your Owens theory as well, but Masoli is getting him the ball and not Collaros. Good luck!

Scruffy, In reading your column on how points are awarded, under the offensive section, look at this. Punt/Kickoff/FG Return for TD = +6PTs, 20 Punt/Kickoff/FG Return Yards = +1 PT (+0.05PT per yard is awarded). But you also have the following in DST Kickoff Return TD = +6PTs, Punt Return TD = +6PTs, FG Return TD = +6PTs. My question to you is, are points being awarded on both the offensive side and DST or is this a mistake that someone made in putting the points together ?

Good catch Curtis. That's different than their NFL scoring formula where all return TD's go on D/ST. That will be worth monitoring as the week goes on.

My bank account is going to take a beating on this, but I'm OK with that.
