The Saskatchewan Roughrider announced today they have signed non-import kicker Warren Kean to the practice roster. Financial details of the signing were not released.
Kean (5’11 – 195 lbs) was originally drafted second overall by the Edmonton Eskimos in the 2007 CFL Draft. He joined the team that season and saw action in the regular-season finale, converting three of four field-goal chances. He also spent time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2008 and with the Calgary Stampeders in 2010.
The 26-year-old spent four seasons with the Concordia Stingers. He was a three-time conference all-star and an all-Canadian in 2005. He holds the CIS record for most made field goals in a single game with nine. As well, he is third in Quebec University Football League history with 53 career field goals.

Former Pat In Big Trouble
Rick Rypien can expect a phone call from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in the next little bit and its a call Rypien won't like. If you haven't seen it, Rypien put his hands on a beaky fan last night in Minnesota. Click here to see the story and video from ESPN.
I'm thinking he'll get around 10 games for this, but I'm also thinking the NHL has to come down hard on the Wild as well. Notice that there was nothing separating the fans from Rypien. No security, no nothing. That's unacceptable!

After losing Game 1, I didn't think Texas stood a chance against the Yankees. I'm now left to wonder if the Rangers should be celebrating a four game sweep because were it not for that 8th inning in Game 1, Texas would be dragging out the brooms.

LOS ANGELES _ Tom Bosley, the patient, understanding father on television's long-running "Happy Days," has died. He was 83.
Bosley died of heart failure early Tuesday at a hospital near his Palm Springs home. Bosley's agent, Sheryl Abrams, said he was also battling lung cancer.
TV Guide ranked Bosley's Happy Days character No. 9 on its list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" in 2004.
The show debuted in 1974 and ran for 11 seasons.
When he was first offered the costarring role in "Happy Days," a series about teenage life in the 1950s, he turned it down.

Shuffling The Deck
Riders head coach Ken Miller basically confirmed after practice today that both Luca Congi and Rob Bagg are done for the season. I asked Miller that with the gruesome injury Luca suffered if his status for the start of next year might be in question. Miller said under the grimmest of circumstances, it could be. Hopefully, Luca will be back and ready to go by June.

Silencing The Yankees
If Roy Halladay isn't the best pitcher in baseball right now, it has to be Cliff Lee. Remember, these two guys could have been teammates, but Philly decided to ship Lee to Seattle so they could get Halladay.
Lee was brilliant at Yankee Stadium as he struck out 13 over 8 innings as Texas hammered the Bronx Bombers 8-0 to take a 2-1 lead in the ALCS. They should be up 3-zip were it not for that 8th inning meltdown in Game 1. The Game 4 pitching matchup has AJ Burnett going for the Yankees and he has been junk down the stretch. The starter for the Rangers will be Tommy Hunter. I don't know if Al Cherny will be catching for him. This game will be on Sportsnet, but it should be on CBC after hockey. For the younger generation reading this, ask Mom or Dad what that means. In a universe that didn't have cable TV, many young Canadians in the 70's knew exactly who Tommy Hunter was. Was he the George Stromboulopoulos of the 70's...OK thats going a little far.

As expected, the Rider Nation is furious with their football team for losing Sunday's first place showdown to the hated Stampeders. Jim Daley continues to get beaten up, people still question Ken Miller's decision making, the o-line is crap and the defence can't stop the run. That's just the tip of the iceberg. That being said. this football team if they win out would win 12 games in 2010 which was two more than 2009 albeit they won't finish first. A lot has been made of the Riders inability to run the football with Wes Cates being one of the whipping boys. Was it just me on Sunday or did Calgary just pin their ears back and disrespect the run. The Riders are going to throw the football---they are a throwing team. If this team is going to keep the defence on its toes, they have to make a team respect the run. There's three weeks to fix that problem. I suggest you start on it at practice today. Yes, strengthening that run defence might also be job number 1 on the to do board as well.

Anyone who doesn't think Scott Schultz has a future in football broadcasting hasn't listened to "The Sportscage". Number 96 has been a tremendous addition to that show and he showed why again yesterday as he ripped the Riders for what happened Sunday. Matt Dominguez wasn't very kind to the team either in his X's and O's segment on CTV. Dominguez is also outstanding on CKRM's pre and post-game shows. I will have the pleasure of working with Schultzie again on Friday when I fill in for Rod seeing he is gone to Edmonton. If Dominguez wanted to come in and make it a triple-team, I could just sit back and let those two break it down.

I recommend one, but I don't recommend having two---especially at one sitting like Saskatchewan's self proclaimed sexiest blogger did on Sunday night. I have not looked to see if his obit was in the paper today. I believe he is OK. He better be because I and many others will be invading his home for UFC 121 Saturday night. Lesnar vs Velasquez. Can't wait!

What do you think about the NFL deciding to start suspending guys for helmet-to-helmet hits instead of fining them. There were many hard hits on the weekend including one to Regina's Jon Ryan that might keep the Seahawks punter out of next week's game against Arizona. Football is a violent game, but is it getting too violent. With the amount of guys that we see getting helped off the field on a weekly basis, one could argue it is but isn't that what we the fans want. Isn't that the type of game that football markets itself with. I want to see the best players in the game do what they do best, and that includes guys like Ray Lewis and James Harrison knocking the snot out of someone if the chance arrives. Yes, some are reckless with their helmets and perhaps what they need is losing a game cheque or two, but that will soften up the game will it not?

Exposing Some Flaws
The Calgary Stampeders are a team that is known to self-destruct if they start off slow. That wasn't the case Sunday. It looked early as if the Riders might blow the Stamps out of the water as they scored on their first two possessions, but that was basically it. After that, the Stampeders controlled the football game winning it 34-26. Some thoughts from the old cranium on this one.
--Has the Rider defence forgot how to tackle in the open-field? This is a problem that is not getting any better and might be getting worse.
--Brandon Browner absolutely owned Andy Fantuz as the Riders could not get #83 open. Browner prevented Fantuz from getting off the line of scrimmage multiple times. Browner won this battle going away.
--I don't think the Riders want to waste a roster spot by bringing in an American kicker. Thus the early talk of bringing in Justin Medlock who is on the Eskimos practice roster isn't worth the time. With Paul McCallum's age, I think BC will find a way to hide Sean Whyte so don't count on him either.
--Chris Getzlaf just keeps getting better and better and better.
--If Jon Cornish can be used a solid compliment to Joffrey Reynolds, why can't the Riders find a way to have Hugh Charles spell off Wes Cates from time to time.
--Why are the Riders constantly called for no yards?
--With Rob Bagg out, will we see Jordan Sisco on the 42 man roster next week? I would say yes!
--Dwight Anderson re-defines the word class.

--I tried the KFC Double Down after the Rider game. It's not bad, but I'm thinking a salt-lick would provide less sodium.
--Graham DeLaet of Weyburn won over 100-thousand dollars after a top 10 finish at the frys.com open. This should ensure that he keeps his card in 2011. Good job Graham!!

--TSN is airing a history of great Vancouver Canuck moments later this week. How are they going to fill the other 45 minutes of the hour?

--Speaking of TSN, I couldn't be happier to see CTV Regina's Lee Jones now working the sidelines at Rider games. I've always thought Lee should have been the guy seeing he is here every day and knows the team. He has gotten his chance and he will make the most of it.
