This And That

--The weekly collection of thoughts running through my noggin---a noggin that was up wayyyyyyy too early this week.

--There's been a lot of talk about Riders head coach Corey Chamblin being named the CFL coach of the year because he led the team to the Grey Cup. I understand that and I endorse it. However, I do have this to ask. Why does the CFL have the inane practice of naming its coach of the year well after the season ends. I thought the regular season was the criteria for the award--one which you can still make a strong argument in Corey's behalf for.  If we are going to include the playoffs, can we revisit the MOP award won by Jon Cornish. If you look at the playoffs, I think you will see Kory Sheets was clearly the 2013 MOP was he not?

--Where's Henry Burris going to end up? It certainly seems as if Hamilton doesn't want him. Winnipeg would be the best guess, but could he end up as a backup to Darian? What would the fallout be if that were to occur! That would be fun to watch!

--Kudos to Riders GM Brendan Taman for getting Terrell Maze re-signed. I think Maze is the team's best overall defensive back and losing him would not have been good.

--An acquaintance of mine sent me a letter written to a Weyburn newspaper asking if I might know who the person in this letter may be. The answer is no, but there are a lot of good questions in the letter which can be found right here. This type of behavior simply can't be tolerated anymore. I hope this guy gets the answers to the questions he seeks.

--I'm hearing a lot of stories about some things over the past few weeks which is making me laugh. I will laugh even harder when a factual story comes out which I hope will be very soon which will make the other stories just dry up and blow away like a storm on the Saskatchewan prairie. It will be great to see what happens then.

--I have no doubt the Seahawks will beat the Saints on Saturday and advance to the NFC Championship game against either Carolina or San Francisco. Some call me extremely cocky for that stance, but I say its confidence. Was it cocky when I said the Riders would roll over Hamilton in the Grey Cup.....no it was confidence! Its also expectation. I expect this team to be at and win the Super Bowl. As a fan, I wouldn't want it any other way at this time of year and fans of the other seven teams involved should feel the same way.

--What was the reasoning behind the theatrics and useless speeches before the announcement of Canada's Olympic hockey team. The reaction on Twitter to the needless delay of the 25 man selection was priceless with even Premier Wall chiming in. The best tweet may have gone to TSN's James Duthie though who said "We may get the rights back by the time we find out". No kidding!

--Speaking of the provincial government, they are taking some heat this week for raising fees at provincial campgrounds. I could care less because my idea of camping is an air conditioned hotel room and cable TV, but are some of the ones complaining the ones that have great big gas guzzlers that cost an arm and a leg to fill up. If it is, what's an extra couple of bucks!!

--ESPN's Dan Lebatard is the subject of controversy for giving his baseball Hall of Fame ballot to someone else to be filled out. Lebatard isn't happy with the fact Barry Bonds and others aren't going to the Hall and the overall selection process. I have no problem in Dan wanting to make some kind of stance against the selection process, but you don't give away your ballot. That is sacred as far as I am concerned and giving it away makes me feel that perhaps you don't really care about the sport as much as you suggest.  When I was voting on Rider and CFL awards, I didn't give my ballot to a fan...I did it myself because it was an honour to do so. Lebatard needed a better plan of attack and one that may have worked because frankly I don't think his stunt will change a thing.

--What exactly does go through the mind of those who drive at a high rate of speed on the Ring Road when its icy? Someone should do a study on that because it would be fascinating to see some of the reasoning these people have. I just about saw a guy lose it completely the other night----he just managed to get everything under control at the last second but had others been closer to him, they  might not have been that lucky.

--Brent Musberger like other aging sports play-by-play guys have seen their best days, but ABC/ESPN really has to start thinking about how much longer Brent is going to do games when he comes on for the national final and says Hi I'm Kirk Herbstreit along with Brent Musburger. What???? Does Rod ever introduce himself as Carm Carteri? Does Phil ever introduce himself as Daniel Fink? Does Chris Cuthbert ever introduce himself as Ray Ferraro?

--That's all I got. Doing a week of mornings has got me punchy and its nap time. Have a great weekend!!!  GO SEAHAWKS!!!!!

If Taman could go out and get Dwight Anderson to get the Rider Nation riled up, he could get Burris too if the price was right. It would suck to see him back here!

Mitchy...

Cornish can have his award, but we all know who the MOP is in this league. I just hope he is back next season!!!

Why would we want Henry????

Even if Drew Willy signs elsewhere we still have Tino Sinceri don't we. He looks like a keeper to me so why take reps from him to give to Hank?

Henrrry !!!! looks good on Sk Rrs fanbase.

Taman? Mr Hopson the mover and shaker responsible for the resulting Rrs 2013 championship team build, Taman just a messenger boy.

That's a horrible story out of Weyburn. The Red Wings should be ashamed of themselves and should be fined heavily. You can't have that in any kind of hockey.

I can't argue with you on your CHamblin theory as much as I would like to.

First year Hamilton Tiger Cats Kent Austin winner for CFL coach of the year award.

How can Chamblin be considered a lock? He was handed one of the most talented teams in history. Hufnagel did everything with a mash unit, juggled three QBs and lost key players all year. If Chamblin wins it great. But acting like no one else performed miracles is arrogant and crazy

what is the story with the red wings? can someone post it?

Dear Mitchell Blair,

The letter you are referring too was from a year ago. The fan that was addressed in the letter passed away this past summer.

The man was a senior citizen and he was how he was his whole life. People in weyburn just learned to tolerate him. The sad thing is I think him being banned from the rink helped lead him to dying from a broken heart.

I do not condone his behavior at all at the time and can understand why the response was such.

And although I do not condone the behavior that the man used at this particular game last year I will let everyone know that believe it or not he was a decent human being.

The man loved the Weyburn Red Wings and was a board member. He would purchase equipment for players out of his own money, paid for players to go to Riders games, Pats games, volunteered at games for umpteen years and was loved by the players.

So yes this unfortunate incident occurred and people will paint everyone in Weyburn with the same brush but I think sometimes both sides of a story have to be told. I am sorry the Chartrand's had the experience they had but to bring up something from over a year ago and since the man has died months ago, bringing this old issue up again is retarded. The board dealt with the issue and everyone has long since moved on.

If the man was like that his whole life, shame on the city of Weyburn for someone not taking him out behind the barn once or twice to kick his ass into shape. There is no excuse for hatred, but in this case, sounds like a community failed a man and robbed him of a chance for growth.

People learned to tolerate him? Does that send the right message as a community? He was tolerated! I'm sorry, but the city of Weyburn and anyone associated with the hockey community should be red-faced over the actions of this individual and the fact they allowed it to go on because he was "tolerated". What a cop-out statement to make!

all over the world, victims of racism are dying slow deaths from broken hearts. Lets focus on the victims of the hatred.

Retarded?
BM, Weyburn, Sk.
Your post seemed to be going along just fine explaining your own perspective of this story until you inserted the word retarded, guess some people just don't learn from the personal experience of others of what is acceptable and what is not. Too bad on the city of Weyburn, Sk. and some of its residents with the pervalent wrong mindset attitudes/actions/speak.

Burris is 10 times the qb Durant is. If the Riders have the chance to get em, get em.

My typo,
prevalent.

you had it right the first time. When you combine perverse (as in the perversion of decency that took place at that rink) and prevalent, you come up with prevalent. It worked.
