Klimchuk Traded To Brandon

That picture of Morgan Klimchuk celebrating his overtime goal in Moose Jaw New Year's Eve is the last picture of him celebrating a goal in a Regina uniform. The Pats have traded Klimchuk to Brandon for 17 year old Jesse Gabrielle.  Here's the official release from the Pats...

Regina Pats Head Coach and Senior VP of Hockey Operations John Paddock announced today the team has acquired forward Jesse Gabrielle (’97) from the Brandon Wheat Kings in exchange for forward Morgan Klimchuk (’95).

A top prospect for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Gabrielle joins the Pats in the midst of a breakout season.  The 6’0”, 214 lbs forward features 25 points (13G, and 12A) to go with 69 penalty minutes in 33 games with Brandon this season.  Last season, Gabrielle posted 26 points (12G, 14A) and 68 penalty minutes in 49 games.  In the 2014 playoffs, the Moosomin, SK product put up 6 points (3G, 3A) in nine games.  In November, the gritty forward was listed as a ‘B’ skater (2nd/3rd round candidate) by Central Scouting for the upcoming NHL Draft.  Internationally, Gabrielle was a member of Team West in last year’s World U17 Hockey Challenge where he had a goal, an assist and 16 penalty minutes in five games played.

“We’re happy to welcome Jesse into our organization and look forward to the skilled and hard-nosed style of play he brings to our team,” commented John Paddock.  “We’re excited to add another high end player to our current group of young players.”

Klimchuk was the Pats’ 5th Overall pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft.  The Calgary, AB native made his Pats debut in 2010 and picked up an assist in his first game.  Klimchuk went on to play in 228 games in the Blue and White (34th all-time) and sits 32nd on the all-time Pats scoring list with 217 points (98G, 119A).  Klimchuk has been an alternate captain for the Pats the last two seasons while being named the Pats’ Most Sportsmanlike Player in both 2013 and 2014.  A leader on and off the ice, Klimchuk was an exemplary representative of the Pats around Regina participating in programs including Read to Succeed and Project First Goal along with numerous appearances in the community.  On the international stage, Klimchuk won a pair of U18 Gold Medals with Team Canada, twice participated in the Subway Super Series against Team Russia and was invited to this year’s World Junior Selection Camp in Toronto.  In his draft year, Klimchuk skated in the CHL Top Prospects game and was later picked 28th Overall by his hometown Calgary Flames in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

“It’s a tough day trading away who we consider a tremendous young man and one of the best two way players in the league,” continued Paddock.  “It’s a step the organization believes we have to make to go ahead with our future.  We thank Morgan immensely for his contribution to the team on and off the ice and I personally want to thank him for his play and the leadership he provided this year.”

Gabrielle is scheduled to be in the lineup tonight for the Pats as they faceoff with the Moose Jaw Warriors in a 7 p.m. puck drop at the Brandt Centre.

Garbage! Not even any picks involved. Why would you trade your best player to the team you are chasing for 1st place? The Pats have 2 games in hand on Brandon, so there is a good chance to catch them. Now Paddock just handed the Pennant to Brandon! At least trade him out of the division, and a player like Klimchuk should fetch more than just a 17 yr old expected to be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round in NHL. Good luck Morgan...you have a shot at a championship now. To the Pats...you suck on this one!!

??? This is all you are getting for Klimchuk. You could have gotten more from other teams and you still had a week to go until the deadline. FAIL!

Gabrielle is a good player, but cmon, this is all you get back in return for a first round draft pick. Did Paddock not pay attention to the Morrisey trade or the Scherbak trade?

Was going to start going to Pats games now that the Xmas season is over....forget it! Can't support an organization that is this stupid. I went into this season with an open mind, but how can this be classified as a good deal, even for the future when it's a one for one deal?

Whoa Whoa Whoa!! Lets look at this.

Gabrielle is a great 17 year old--maybe the best 17 year old in the WHL. He could be a first rounder. You are basically maybe getting a better Klimchuk than he was at 17 now and someone who can play with Steel in the future. I think a 2nd or 3rd round pick could have come Regina's way in this deal too, but I like what Paddock has done here. Sit back and analyze before reacting.

The price for Klimchuk would have been greater next week. Why pull the switch now?

Wow the people on here. I'm not going to any games till the Parkers leave. Now I'm not going to go to games cause of a trade. Lol. Let them build a team for the future. Real joke some for some of theses fans. They must be rider couch potato fans also.

Why can't the Pats take a good run this year? Great goalie, depth at forward and d. They have beaten the best teams in this league and had a great coast trip. How much better do they have to be to contend? What more would they need to win, instead of give away AGAIN! 2 D-men have plus/minus of at least +20 and scoring is spread around. Klimchuk is proven. Gabrielle is a "maybe". This is definately the year to add, not subtract.

"theses" fans have been going to games since I was small. Typical Saskatchewan fans. Let's wait and build until next year. Hey folks a that go to the Pats games...what are ya watching? With Klimchuk this team was damn good! Check the record and tell me why they can't win the Conference. List the reasons pls.

Doug brings up a great point, but the bottom line is more could have been gotten for Klimchuk. I have a hard time believing other teams wouldn't have made better offers for him.

Get a grip Lee-Anne! This is but one piece in an evolving situation. The team will be positioning itself for a championship run in 2016/17, count on it. Have some faith in the new regime. As for this season, there is still some exciting hockey ahead and the young future stars on the roster will continue to get better.

Darrell asks a very good question as well.

Why can't they have a championship run this year? They DID have the team to do it. What will make 2015/16 better? Do tell. Oh right, I forgot...wait until next year!

This trade is absolutely outstanding for the Pats organization! The past regime is why they needed to make this trade. What happens after this year? If they don't trade a good number of the remaining 19 year olds we'll be trading Sam Steel in a few years. This franchise appears to be structuring itself for long term success. Awesome trade, Paddock is a 30 year PROFESSIONAL, he knows what he's doing!

man oh man people, you truly don't get building an organization for long term success, unbelieveable trade by Paddock, Gabriel's grit and skill is unquestionable, Pats are fortunate to have him, Paddocks not done

You make zero sense. We are small and weak. Mediocre defence after our top 2. No way we can take any og the top teams in a seven game series.

Le Anne , please move away from Saskatchewan, we are all sick and reallyl tired of your despicable old-Sask mentality.

2 small veteran d-men often injured. The other four basically rookies. Under playoff pressure it would be another 4 and out. For most of the season Klimchuk has been a non-factor. We got exactly what we need at a fair price. They didn't want 2015-16 picks because they want to build for a run with Steel who will be better than Klimchuk.

Gabrielle is better than a mediocre player and two picks in 2016 and 2017. Get a grip. The team is not good enough to contend as a top for. As a seasons ticket holder for years I know a great team when I see it and we're not a great team.

In two years when we win 48-52 games all of the numb nuts will be cackling how great Gabrielle is and how much grit he brings to the line with Steel.

If we hadn't been cheesy buyers for so many fruitless years maybe we could have afforded some pieces. Mismanagement made sure we couldn't. Watch and see the right way to do things.
