The Fat Lady Is Rehearsing
The road to the playoffs for the Regina Pats may be too steep after losing in a shootout to the Red Deer Rebels Tuesday night in front of 41 hundred fans at the Brandt Centre. While the Pats do get a point from the loss, they are simply spinning their wheels. They are six points back of 8th place Prince Albert with both teams having 18 games to go.
The Pats looked tired last nite and I thought at times they looked disinterested. They were fortunate to get a point as it looked like they wouldn't until Matt Strueby tied it with just 11 seconds to go.
Yes, they still have a chance at catching the Raiders, but I think with 4 games against Brandon, three against Saskatoon and one each against Calgary and Vancouver that their fate might be sealed. The Raiders and Broncos will have to hit the skids in this final quarter while Regina will have to come up with huge efforts against the league's top teams.
Of the 41-hundred that were there, many were grumbling at night's end. I can't blame them. Regina put in two snoozers against the Ice and Rebels. It will be tougher against the East leading Blades and a return matchup against Kootenay on Friday and Saturday.
----
The biggest circus in sports happened Tuesday. That is media day at the Super Bowl. I can only imagine what types of headaches a day like this would be for Rider communications man extraordinaire Ryan Whippler. The players all sit at tables and get grilled by media--not just sports media, but media in general. All types of questions are asked---few of them relate to football. Its a gong show. Its one of the big differences between the NFL and the CFL. Today is really the only day you get a chance to generate stories from the players who will play a role in the Super Bowl. Media availability is not great. Usually its outside, but rain forced both teams inside meaning reporters will get another chance to grill the teams at their respective hotels today.
As you may or may not know, reporters have the lay of the land during Grey Cup week as they can talk to any player just about anytime after practice. They can walk right out on the field and do that. Not so in the NFL. CFL teams have one closed practice, and a meal with the media. That is actually the best time to get players for feature interviews as they are not worried about geting back inside to the locker-room and missing a meeting.
I would love to see the look of some American reporters if they got to see how easy Canadian reporters have it at the Grey Cup compared to what they have to deal with. I'm guessing those representing Canadian media in Miami realize if they don't already how much easier it is covering the CFL championship than it is the NFL championship. As big as an NFL fan as I am, I don't think I would want to get into that circus whatsoever. Who's kidding who, if I ever got the chance, my tape machine would probably malfunction on me.

Are they planning the parade in Toronto after Giguere blanks the Devils in his Toronto debut?

Attention Cliff Mapes: Just a reminder about your marketing slogan that we came up with last night after the game. The Regina Pats---they will drive you batshit crazy!

Congratulations to Don Narcisse on his CFL hall of fame induction that will happen this year. Its something that I think is overdue. Narco is one of the greatest to wear a Riders uniform and its great that his accomplishments will forever be remembered.

One has to think Amber Holland can't afford any more losses at the Scotties after she lost 8-7 to New Brunswick Tuesday night. Amber and her Saskatchewan foursome are now 3-4. A 5th loss may be and likely will be too much. Ontario leads the way at 6-1 and Krista McCarville's rink is looking great. One would have to say right now she would carry Canadian colours into the Worlds at Swift Current. Jennifer Jones may have something to say about that before all is said and done. It would seem the talk of the event though might be the Prince Edward Island rink--and its not for their curling ability. The rink is getting compliments for being "Scotties Hotties" on the TSN message board. I must admit I haven't taken a good look at the team, but I'm sure that they will be on TV before the week is over seeing they are sitting near the top of the standings.
By the way, its great to watch Vic Rauter, Linda Moore and Ray Turnbull do their thing. Turnbull is hanging up the microphone at the end of this season meaning Russ Howard will likely take over. Nothing against Russ, but it won't be the same. The impact on curling in this country that those three have had thanks to the coverage TSN brings us is second to none.

One Point Is Better Than None
We all know it will be tough for the Regina Pats to make the playoffs. The mountain may be too steep, but the team will give it all they can in the final quarter of the WHL season to get there.
Try and try as they might on Monday night, they couldn't get the job done losing 2-1 in a shootout to the Kootenay Ice in a game that won't be confused for a classic anytime soon.
The two teams looked like they wanted to be elsewhere at the start of the game and really it didn't pick up until Jordan Eberle scored on a power play in the 3rd. The overtime was great with both teams having chances, but in the end the Ice walk away with two points and the Pats one. It leaves Regina seven points behind 8th place Prince Albert. Red Deer is at the Dome tonight in a game that will be seen across the country on Rogers Sportsnet. Its also Jordan Eberle autograph night as Canada's best junior hockey player will sign autographs after the game. The team will hand out a picture of Eberle for 5 dollars. All proceeds go to the WHL Haiti fund.
-----
The Oilers win and the Flames lose. That's more like it!!!!! Those wins should be few and far between for the Oil though so they don't endanger getting either Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin. By the way, why did the Flames wait a night to make that trade with the Rangers that is now official. Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust are headed to Broadway for Chris Higgins and Ales Kotalik. That move to sign Jokinen was a great one wasn't it Calgary fans. You gotta wonder if Matthew Barnaby was right on trade deadline day last year when he said the guy was a cancer.
----
Rumour has it that the Oilers were ready to send Sheldon Souray to Washington. The Oilers would have received Tomas Fleischmann and Karl Alzner. Andrew Cogliano might have also been in the mix. Of course Souray's injured wrist means that won't be happening.
-----
Amber Holland split her games at the Scotties beating Ontario and losing to Manitoba. She is 2-3 going into Tuesday's play.
-----
As you go into your Tuesday, I say....
Muscles come and go; flab lasts.

Barron Miles Calls It A Career
And what a career it was.....
BCLions.com Staff
VANCOUVER -- Quarterbacks across the CFL are breathing a little easier today as one of the CFL’s most gifted and decorated defensive backs has retired. Barron Miles, who spent five seasons in Black and Orange as well as seven seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, announced Monday that he has turned in his shoulder pads for a clipboard and whistle.
“I am very pleased to have Barron join the Lions coaching staff for the 2010 season as well as adding his talents to our scouting department,” said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono. “As one of the finest defensive backs to ever play in this league, Barron’s career speaks for itself and I look forward to adding his leadership to our staff in 2010.”
The Nebraska grad and former CFL Most Outstanding Rookie (1998) wrapped up a storied 12-year career in 2009 finishing among all-time CFL greats at the safety position. Barron set the all-time CFL record for most blocked kicks (13), ranking second all-time with 66 interceptions (Less Browne 87).
Appearing in 189 career CFL games (88 as a Lion), Miles finished his farewell season on a high note, picking up league all-star honours for the sixth time (99, 00, 02, 06, 08, 09) and bring his divisional kudos to nine. Leading the league atop the interceptions standings for the third time in his career, the feared ballhawk also notched 54 tackles in 2009 – his highest total since his rookie season in 1998.
One of the Lions most consistent and dependable defensive performers, Miles appeared in three Grey Cup Championships, including the club’s memorable 2006 victory over the Montreal Alouettes.
With his retirement from the Black and Orange, Miles will join former teammate Mark Washington in the coaching ranks, mentoring the clubs defensive backs.

Monday Night Hockey
It’s a very hectic, and rare, couple of days coming up for the Regina Pats. They will take on the Kootenay Ice tonight at 7pm in their make-up game from Sunday, January 24th that was postponed because of poor weather.
Tuesday night is an even bigger night for the blue and white. They will take on a Red Deer Rebels club that is holding down one of the coveted final playoff spots that the Pats so dearly want. It’s also a chance for fans to help people in need both at home, and a world away.
Tuesday night’s game is brought to you by “Waste Management” and fans are urged to bring a non-perishable food item that will be donated to the Regina Food Bank on behalf of “Waste Management”. It’s also “Jordan Eberle Autograph Night”. The Pats superstar will be available for autographs after the game is finished. There will be beautiful glossy Jordan Eberle action prints, courtesy of Konica-Minolta, available for $5 with all of the proceeds going to the WHL’s Haiti Relief Fund.
So come out and cheer on the Pats as they climb the Eastern Conference Standings, and help out a couple of great causes as well. It’s a 7pm puck drop, get your tickets at the Ticketmaster box office or call 543-7088. You can also visit reginapats.com for more information.

2010 CFL Sked Is Out
CFL KICKS OFF 2010 SCHEDULE WITH MOMENTUM
TORONTO -- The 2010 Canadian Football League schedule kicks off with a Grey Cup rematch, features classic Labour Day match-ups, and promises to go down to the wire.
“All of the elements are in place for a tremendous 2010 season: competitive teams, great players and, of course, tremendous fans,” said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon.
“In fact, we start 2010 with significant momentum because of our fans. We’re coming off a 2009 season that featured a record television audience for one of the most remarkable Grey Cups in history, dramatically higher ratings for the CFL on TSN throughout 2009, and the eighth straight season we reached a total attendance mark of more than two million fans,” he said.
“This year is about building on that momentum, and we can’t wait to get started.”
Officially released today, the 2010 schedule is capped by the 98th Grey Cup Game in Edmonton on Sunday, November 28th.
It also features the first regular season CFL game ever played in Atlantic Canada, with the Edmonton Eskimos meeting the Toronto Argonauts in Moncton on September 26 in CFL Touchdown Atlantic, the name chosen by Moncton area fans.
Other highlights include:
• Canada Day Kickoff including a rematch of the 97th Grey Cup Game when the Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Montreal Alouettes on Canada Day, July 1st, followed by the Toronto Argonauts visiting the Calgary Stampeders later that evening, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers hosting the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday, July 2 and the BC Lions visiting the Edmonton Eskimos on Sunday, July 4.
• CFL Retro goes seventies: This year the CFL and its teams are celebrating the 1970s with retro-themed jerseys by Reebok during Week 6 and 7. Details to follow.
• Classic Labour Day Weekend match-ups featuring the Lions at Montreal, the Bombers in Regina, the Argos visiting Hamilton and the Eskimos travelling to Calgary.
• Thanksgiving Weekend games that include the Eskimos visiting Hamilton, the Argos in Regina, Calgary in Montreal and British Columbia at Winnipeg.
• A final weekend that takes on added significance after the battle for playoff spots went down to the very last game of 2009, this year has the Stamps visiting Winnipeg, the Lions in Hamilton, the Eskimos in Saskatchewan and the Argos travelling to Montreal.
The CFL Playoffs feature the Eastern and Western Semi-Finals on Sunday November 14 and the Eastern and Western Finals on Sunday November 21.
The are plenty of storylines already in place for 2010, including the Montreal Alouettes’ bid to repeat as Grey Cup champs, the Riders’ attempt to bounce back from a stunning last second defeat in last year’s Grey Cup in Calgary, the Stamps and Lions looking to return to the top in the West, the Argos and Bombers featuring retooled front offices and new head coaches, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, looking to continue their resurgence in the East.
TSN returns as the CFL’s exclusive English broadcast partner of the regular season, playoffs and the 98th Grey Cup, while RDS will once again deliver fans French language broadcasts of all Alouettes’ games, the 2010 playoffs and Grey Cup. Of course, fans can download the entire CFL schedule, and follow our league all year round, at CFL.ca and their favourite team sites.
Launched last July 1st, the new CFL Network – CFL.ca and seven of eight team sites – had more than eight million page views during the 2009 regular season and playoffs. And November, 2009 featured 1.1 million unique visitors to CFL.ca alone, a 75 per cent increase over November, 2008.
“Our fans were there for us in 2009, and they were rewarded with a season of tremendous football,” Cohon said. “We’re working hard to ensure 2010 is even better.”
