WHL Grads Dominate NHL Rosters

The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that 20 percent of all players who have played in the National Hockey League through the first half of the 2011-12 season are graduates of the WHL.

Of the 881 players who had played at least one game in the NHL as of January, 172 are graduates of the WHL.

In addition to the 172 players, there are 40 WHL graduates currently on the coaching staff of NHL clubs, and another 29 WHL graduates who currently occupy key management positions with NHL clubs.

The Minnesota Wild lead all NHL Clubs with 12 WHL Alumni having suited up for at least one NHL game. The Phoenix Coyotes, Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames each have seen 11 WHL grads suit up for at least one game this season, while the Edmonton Oilers boast 10 WHL grads.

All 30 teams in the NHL have at least one WHL grad who have played in the NHL this season.

The Western Hockey League continues to be a leader in developing NHL-caliber players, while also offering a World Class scholarship to every graduating player.

This might be one of the coolest ads I have ever seen. Well done! Imagine being a part of this....

Dan Farthing Returns To Riderville

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are pleased to announce that they have formalized its relationship with Dan Farthing who has been named the team’s Strength and Conditioning Coordinator.

“We are excited to have Dan officially back with the Riders,” stated Assistant General Manager Jeremy O’Day. “Dan will be a huge asset in this increased role with the team and we believe his contributions will be reflected through on-field success.”

Farthing, who is currently the Director of Sport Performance Training at Level 10 Fitness, has worked with the Rider players over the past numerous seasons through training sessions. This new partnership will ensure Rider players now have access to better designed facilities, consultative services in both training and nutrition as well as regularly scheduled supervised workouts.

“I am very excited about this new initiative, mostly for the players,” said Farthing. “Had this level of support been available during my career, I know that I would have placed a huge value on it and seen it as a tremendous benefit that would give me the best opportunity to be the best player I could possibly be.”

As a former player with the Riders, Farthing currently sits 3rd in all-time receptions and 9th in all-time receiving yardage and is a recent inductee into the Saskatchewan Roughrider Plaza of Honor. In addition to his experience as a professional player, Farthing brings his academic expertise as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, a Certified Exercise Physiologist with The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, a Consultant for the Canadian Sport Centre and the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan, a Master of Kinesiology (U of R ’96) and the University of Saskatchewan’s Most Distinguished Graduate (1992). Farthing and his team of Sport Performance Training Specialists, Sport Nutritionists and Yoga Instructors from Level 10 Fitness are very excited to be part of the Roughrider Team.

Bucks Back In The Peg

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are pleased to announce that quarterback Buck Pierce has re-signed with the team after leading the Blue Bombers to an East Division Championship last season. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Pierce was scheduled to become a free agent on February 16th.

“This organization gave me an opportunity two years ago and I am very grateful to them for that and very happy to be remaining a Blue Bomber,” said Pierce. “Winnipeg is my home now and I can’t wait to get back on the field and do everything that I can to help us return to that Grey Cup game and defend our East Division title.”

The 2011 season saw Pierce record career-high numbers in many different categories including starts (16), completions (261), attempts (411), passing yards (3,348) and rushing yards (324).

“We are thrilled that we were able to get a deal done with Buck who is a tremendous competitor on the field and a great ambassador for this organization in the community,” said Blue Bomber Vice-President and General Manager Joe Mack. “His experience and leadership is invaluable in our locker room and we look forward to having him return in 2012 and help our team compete for a Grey Cup championship.”

Pierce has thrown for 13,162 yards and 68 touchdowns in his seven-year career which started in 2005 with the BC Lions. He originally signed with Winnipeg in April of 2010.

Why Saskatoon?? Why??

While I'm sure this will be considered as disrespectful to the people of Saskatoon, it is not meant to be that way and if you take it as such, I do apologize in advance. However, I have just one question to ask of those who are still pursuing a CFL franchise for your city. That question is "Why are you trying to destroy the Riders?"

Saskatchewan simply can't support two CFL teams. We may be able to at some point in the future, but that time is a long ways away as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I think your chance of being home to an NHL team is greater than that of being a CFL city.

What makes the Riders great and unique is the fan base. People come from all over this fine province of ours to watch the football team do their thing. Yes, I would say over 75 percent of that group is from within a 100 kilometer radius of Regina, but are you going to tell me that people from Saskatoon, the Battlefords, Prince Albert, Nipawin, etc. etc. etc would make that trek to Mosaic Stadium or whatever the new stadium is called the way they do now. Do you think those in the southern half of the province would go to Saskatoon for games. No they wouldn't---unless it was a game between Saskatoon and Regina and yes, the first thing that would be done would be to change the name of the team to Regina, because they are no longer a Saskatchewan team.

While Regina is in the midst of getting its own stadium----one that will be costly, Saskatoon doesn't have a facility to house a team. Please don't tell me that PCS Park could be modified to CFL standards because you need a modern day stadium and not a university one to succeed. That would also cost money---money that simply isn't there.

The corporate support that the Riders get from places like Saskenergy and others would have to be split in two. Those dollars are the lifeblood of the football team and now you are asking to divide the pie? Lets be realistic here. Continuing this dream of having a CFL team will not only kill the popularity and the financial success of the Riders as we know it now and your team will also suffer. When you tell someone you are from Saskatchewan---they automatically associate it with the Riders. Its just like you say Yorkton and you think Terriers, you say Weyburn and you think Red Wings. The Riders are fine without any provincial competition, their bank account is fine and their future is fine and will be once ground is broken on the new stadium. If the truth is that you are jealous over the fact that Regina is getting a stadium and you're not, I say get over it and try to lure the NHL to Saskatoon with the building you already have and the building that won't be coming to Regina anytime soon.

This dream is just a pipedream. The chances of me having an affair with Jennifer Aniston are about as remote as this happening sometime over the next 25 years. Please move on to another idea, because this one is just not going to fly.

One QB Goes Off The Free-Agent Market

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are pleased to announce that import quarterback Joey Elliott (6-3, 216, Purdue, DOB: August 2, 1986 in Franklin, Indiana) has re-signed with the team. He was scheduled to become a free agent on February 16th.

“Joey is an athletic quarterback with great potential in this league,” said Vice-President and General Manager Joe Mack. “He is a young and enthusiastic player who is a great team guy and has the leadership qualities that you look for in a quarterback.”

Elliott began last season as the second-string quarterback on the depth chart but suffered a torn ACL in his only appearance in week three against the Calgary Stampeders and missed the remainder of the season. He has played in four games over two seasons with the Blue Bombers – including two starts in 2010 – and has completed 45 of 91 passes for 522 yards and two touchdowns against three interceptions.

“I’m very happy that I was able to sign this deal and remain a Blue Bomber,” said the 26-year old Elliott. “You never want to miss playing time with an injury, so sitting out last season has made me hungrier and more committed to coming back stronger than ever. I look forward to getting back onto the field in Winnipeg.”

At Purdue, Elliott became the starter in his senior season and completed 267 of 433 passes that year for 3,026 yards and 22 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. He also threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns in Purdue’s amazing upset victory over the seventh ranked Ohio State in 2009.
