Swimming – The Cougars head to Victoria this weekend for the Canada West Championships with the largest roster in recent history, as nine men and five women will compete for the U of R at the conference meet. Rookie swimmer Quinn Moore has had a brilliant first season with the Cougars, as he's collected six CIS standards already and has broken seven University of Regina records. Rookie Dale Hamilton and second-year athlete Chris Myers have also hit CIS standards for the men's team, while Jessica Winter has already qualified for the CIS Championships on the women's side.

Women's Basketball (CIS Ranking: No. 3) – The Cougars (12-2) fell one spot in the CIS Top Ten after a road split last weekend, being edged 61-58 by No. 9-ranked Victoria on Friday before recovering for a 63-53 win over No. 5 UBC on Saturday. The Cougars were passed by Windsor and Saint Mary's – both undefeated in conference play – but jumped ahead of Fraser Valley to end up in the No. 3 spot. The Cougars are back home this weekend for a pair of games against Prairie Division rival Alberta on Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport (6:15 p.m.).

Men's Basketball – The Cougars (5-9) lost twice during their West Coast road swing, falling 79-55 to Victoria on Friday and playing No. 2-ranked UBC tough in a 75-65 loss on Saturday. Paul Gareau led the team offensively during the trip, going 18-for-23 from the field and ending up with a team-high 39 points over the two games. In town this weekend is No. 4-ranked Alberta, which comes in boasting a Prairie Division-leading 12-2 record. Tip-off at the CKHS is scheduled for 8 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

Men's Hockey – The Cougars (11-9-2) put together a road sweep over Mount Royal last weekend to lock up their first Canada West postseason spot since 2009. Lucas Gore had a 31-save shutout in Friday's 3-0 win, and Ward Szucki's hat trick powered the Cougars to a 6-5 victory on Saturday. The Cougars host No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan (15-7-0) at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night (7 p.m.) before the teams finish off the home-and-home on Saturday night in Saskatoon.

Women's Hockey (CIS Ranking: No. 10) – The Cougars (14-7-1) clinched a playoff berth after taking three out of a possible four points against Mount Royal at The Co-operators Centre, winning 5-3 on Friday and losing 2-1 in overtime on Saturday. The third-place Cougars continue to jockey for position in the Canada West standings this weekend, as they'll take on Saskatchewan in a home-and-home series that will see the teams open up in Saskatoon on Friday night before playing in Regina on Saturday (7 p.m.).

Women's Volleyball – The Cougars (3-13) were defeated twice by Mount Royal at home last weekend, losing in four sets on Friday night and in straight sets on Saturday. Up next for the U of R is a road trip to Winnipeg, as the Cougars will meet the University of Manitoba (7-9) on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. After this weekend, the Cougars will only have four matches remaining on the Canada West schedule.

Men's Volleyball – The Cougars fell to 2-14 on the season after a pair of losses to Mount Royal last weekend, dropping a five-set heartbreaker on Friday and falling in straight sets on Saturday. The Cougars head east this weekend to square off with No. 4-ranked Manitoba (8-6) on Saturday and Sunday with first serve scheduled for 3 p.m. both afternoons.

Track & Field (Women's CIS Ranking: No. 7 / Men's CIS Ranking: No. 10) – Three school records were broken as the Cougars competed at the Golden Bear Open over the weekend. Two of the records were courtesy of distance coach Graeme McMaster's group, as Karissa LePage bettered her own U of R record in the 3000-metre run and Matt Johnson broke a record in the 1500-metre run which had stood since 2004. Chris Pickering also rewrote the record book, as his throw of 17.87 metres in the shot put broke his own 2011 school mark of 17.33 metres. Pickering becomes the first Canada West athlete to hit the CIS standard in the event and is also the No. 2-ranked shot putter in the nation. The Cougars will compete in the Sled Dog Meet on Friday and Saturday in Saskatoon.

Women's Wrestling (CIS Ranking: No. 3) – Lisa McKibben and Jasmine Slinn led the Cougars with third-place finishes over the weekend at the Guelph Open. Slinn was 4-1 at 48 kg, while McKibben was 3-1 at 72 kg. The team returns to the mats next weekend at the Wesmen Invitational, which will be hosted by the University of Winnipeg on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2.

Men's Wrestling (CIS Ranking: No. 7) – The Cougars were edged 27-21 by Dickinson State in a dual on Friday and finished in sixth place in the overall standings at the Tyler Plummer Classic in Dickinson, N.D. on Saturday. Steven Schneider, Mark Ballon, Shaun Trotman, Jacob Luczak, and John Lendvoy all won their dual matches for the Cougars on Friday, while Luczak and Schneider led the U of R with third-place finishes in tournament action. The Cougars are in preparation for the Canada West Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Alberta in mid-February.

SC Final To Go To One Game Winner Take All

/=S=/uperman Is Coming To Regina

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have acquired import wide receiver Geroy Simon from the B.C. Lions.

Simon (6’0 – 198) is one of the most decorated players in Canadian Football League history. The 14 year veteran is currently the league’s all-time leading receiver recording 15,787 career receiving yards to date. The 37-year-old presently sits third in receptions with 989, just 29 catches away from the all-time record. His 100 receiving touchdowns also places him third among career leaders.

Last season, the six time CFL All-Star had 54 receptions for 700 yards and two touchdowns in 13 regular season games. He was on pace for his tenth consecutive 1,000 yard season before missing five games due to injury.

· In exchange, the Riders have sent import receiver Justin Harper and a 3rd Round pick in the 2014 Canadian College Draft to the B.C. Lions.

GSP vs Diaz at UFC 158

If there is unfinished business between welterweight king Georges St-Pierre and bad boy Nick Diaz, it will settled at UFC 158 at the Bell Centre on March 16.
UFC boss Dana White wanted to pit St-Pierre against Anderson Silva, a bout many fans have waited for, but the champion from Montreal asked for Diaz.

"Georges has been a great champion and he's been great for the company and if he wants another fight, we'll make it for him," White said Wednesday at a news conference attended by a throng of media and about 100 fans. "We knew Nick wanted the fight, so it worked out."

It will be the main event on a card that features six of the top-10 ranked welterweights.

The co-feature between St-Pierre's training partner Rory (Ares) MacDonald (14-1) and Carlos Condit (28-6) and another 170-pound bout pitting Johny Hendricks (14-1) against Jake Ellenberger (28-6) may help decide who St-Pierre's future opponents will be if he stretches his winning streak to 11 by defeating Diaz.

"This is the big fight that people wanted to see, more than any other guy," said St-Pierre (23-2). "For me, Nick is the No. 1 contender.

"There's a history between us. We both wanted this fight for a long time. Let's do it."

The two were scheduled to square off nearly two years ago, but Diaz (27-8-1) was dropped from the bout when he failed to turn up at two promotional events.

St-Pierre mentioned he was glad to see Diaz present and accounted for.

"I'm just happy to get the show on the road," said Diaz, the former Strikeforce champion. "I didn't make it to the last press conference.

"It wasn't very professional on my part. I wanted to fight, but I had to learn my lesson."

The 31-year-old St-Pierre returned from an 18-month injury layoff on Nov. 17 to defeat Condit by unanimous decision and retain the championship belt.

Other bouts have Patrick (The Predator) Cote (19-8) of Montreal facing ex-Strikeforce fighter (Vicious) Bobby Voelker (24-8) in his UFC debut.

Middleweight Nick (The Promise) Ring (13-1) of Calgary faces Chris Camozzi (18-5).

Jordan Mein of Lethbridge, Alta., and Sean (The Punisher) Pierson of Toronto are also on the card along with Montreal fighters John Makdessi and Yves Jabouin.

Ticket sales to the general public go on sale Saturday.

Bauer Resigns In Calgary

As a result of the ownership restructuring that took place in the spring of 2012, the Calgary Stampeders announced today the resignation of President/COO Lyle Bauer. Lyle has agreed to stay on in a consulting role to effect a smooth executive transition.

“I have enjoyed my time with the Stampeders immensely and thank the ownership group and fans for a wonderful opportunity,” said Bauer. “The team is in good hands to carry on our commitment to solid community ownership and high-performance football.”

“Lyle’s decision to leave was based primarily on a significant change in roles and responsibilities given the benefits of new ownership synergy and infrastructure efficiency,” said Stampeders Co-Chair John Forzani.

“We appreciate everything Lyle has done for the club,” said Stampeders Co-Chair Ken King. “He is a consummate sports professional and has been a great benefit in ensuring a successful ownership transition.”

Lions Trying To Trade Simon

The B.C. Lions have given all-star receiver Geroy Simon permission to check out the CFL trade market.

General manager Wally Buono said Tuesday he’s giving Simon the opportunity to gauge potential interest because the Lions aren’t prepared to pay the veteran his current contract.

The 37-year-old slotback has spent 12 of his 14 CFL seasons with B.C. and last year surpassed Milt Stegall as the league leader in all-time receiving yards.

But hamstring injuries forced Simon to miss five games, limiting him to 54 catches for 700 yards and two TDs in 2012.

It marked the first time in 10 seasons that Simon had not cracked the 1,000-yard receiving plateau.
The Lions have been busy this off-season, signing quarterback Travis Lulay to a contract extension reportedly worth $450,000 annually while also releasing veteran cornerback Byron Parker and slotback Arland Bruce III.
