Men’s Hockey – The Cougars host their home openers this weekend at The Co-operators Centre, as they’ll lift the lid on the conference schedule on Friday and Saturday night against the Calgary Dinos. Faceoff for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Calgary series marks the first of two consecutive home weekends for the U of R, as the Cougars will also be at home next weekend against Lethbridge.

 

Rams Football – The Rams fell to 1-4 on the season after a costly 34-15 loss to Manitoba in which quarterback Cayman Shutter was knocked out of the game after suffering a concussion on a second-quarter hit. The Rams are back at home this weekend to face the University of Alberta (0-5) in a Saturday afternoon game at Mosaic Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

 

Men’s Basketball – First-year head coach Steve Burrows will get his first look at the Cougars in a game situation this Friday night, as the U of R hosts Medicine Hat College on Friday night in exhibition action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Tip-off against the Rattlers is scheduled for 7 p.m.

 

Women’s Hockey – The Cougars kick off the 2013-14 Canada West schedule with the first of two consecutive road weekends, as they’ll play the University of Calgary on Friday and Saturday at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary. The U of R is back on the road the following weekend with a pair of games at Lethbridge.

 

Women’s Soccer – The Cougars split their home weekend at the U of R Field, losing to Calgary on Saturday but recovering for a 2-1 win over Lethbridge on Sunday to move their conference record to 3-3-1 on the season. Tied for sixth in the tight Canada West standings, the Cougars continue the conference schedule with road matches at No. 3 Alberta (6-0-2) and Mount Royal (3-4-1) on Saturday and Sunday.

 

Women’s Basketball – The Cougars cruised to a 91-30 exhibition win over Lakeland College on Thursday evening. They’ll face their first CIS competition of the season this weekend in Fredericton, N.B. at the Accreon Helen Campbell Tournament, where they’ll meet Laval, host New Brunswick, and Dalhousie in the span of three days before returning to Regina.

 

Cross Country – Matt Johnson finished just outside of the top ten to lead the men’s team to a 13th-place finish out of 44 teams in the Div. II category at the Roy Griak Invitational last Saturday in Minneapolis, while rookie Jesse Van Eaton was the women’s team’s top finisher at the event. Both teams are back in action this Saturday at the University of Saskatchewan Open.

 

Men’s Volleyball – The Cougars face their first CIS competition of the season this weekend, as they head to Calgary for a non-conference tournament. They’ll match up against host Mount Royal and Calgary and will also play Red Deer College (CCAA) in the round robin portion of the event. The Cougars will play a total of four matches before returning to Regina.

 

Women’s Volleyball – The Cougars head to British Columbia to play in the West Coast Classic, an eight-team non-conference tournament hosted by Trinity Western and UBc. The U of R will face TWU and Thompson Rivers on Friday, Mount Royal and UBC Okanagan on Saturday, and UBC on Sunday.

People should really do themselves a favour and check out the Cougars hockey team. Its more entertaining than the Pats and its half the cost. The hockey is great!
