Riders Add 2, Release Levi Steinhauer & Fred Bennett

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have had a busy Wednesday as they have signed two players while releasing two veterans.

Defensive back Fred Bennett and defensive lineman Levi Steinhauer have been released while defensive lineman Ivan Brown has been signed to a new contract thus avoiding free agency while import defensive lineman Derrick Lott was signed to a deal.

Bennett, a five-year CFL veteran, was acquired by the Riders from Calgary last season after losing his starting job in the Stamps’ secondary. He started nine games at the corner position in Saskatchewan, slotting in alongside halfback Justin Cox in the Rider backfield.

Steinhauer, 26, completed his fourth season with the Riders in 2016, playing in three games at the fullback position. The Moose Jaw, Sask. native and graduate of Saskatchewan joined the Riders in 2013 after going 40th overall (fifth round) in the 2013 CFL Draft.

Being local doesn't mean a lot anymore.

Is it too late for Copeland to pull off a Reynolds and lure Jones to Toronto? The sooner the Riders get rid of this guy, the better they are.
