Final Thoughts on Week 1

Having the weekend to digest the CFL games, I've got some final thoughts on the opening weekend along with submissions for who I think should be recognized as the top players of the week. Here ya go...

--Does everyone's thoughts on where the Eskimos finish this year change because of the Jesse Lumsden injury. This team must find someone who can give them a running game otherwise defences will just be able to key on Ricky Ray and that isn't what Richie Hall wants.

--Two plays that aren't being talked enough in Friday's Rider win are the decision by Wally Buono to go for two points in the 3rd quarter. That two point conversion failed and as it turned out, it meant the Lions had to go for a touchdown instead of a field goal at the end. The other play is the Jamie Boreham recovery of his blocked punt that the BC player fumbled on the return. That play was also huge, but is getting no discussion because of the play of the Rider D.

--When he returns from the injured list, will Ken Miller and Paul Lapolice want to have Wes Cates and Hugh Charles in the backfield at the same time in one of those thunder/lightning backfields. It could certainly open up some things with another dual threat back there.

--Will the Riders call Mike Abou-Mechrek this week considering the way their offensive linemen are falling?

--Where in Montreal is the fountain of youth because Anthony Calvillo just doesn't show any sign of aging??

--I don't know who Winnipeg's director of player personnel is, but he failed in not finding the Bombers a kicker in the off-season. Alexis Serna just isn't the guy. Somewhere Troy Westwood must chuckle.

--Seeing Calgary lose because of their cockiness is nice to see. If Winnipeg could somehow beat them on Friday night(which I don't see happening), it would be interesting to see what type of fallout would come from an 0-2 start.

--What are they thinking in Hamilton right now. Fans can't be expected to put up with a performance like the home opener all year are they. It needs to get turned around in a big hurry.

--I didn't get a chance to see CFL commissioner Mark Cohon when he was here Friday night, but looking at video of the commish, he is still simply the "coolest" commissioner out there. He really should be the Dos Equis guy. He's simply too cool to wear a tie and as was said in the press box Friday night, I don't know where he gets his duds, but he makes Colin O'Brians look like Walmart.

Players of the week
Offence

1. Toronto RB Jamal Robertson. He had 134 yards on the ground and another 53 catching the football.

2. Saskatchewan WR Weston Dressler. No sophomore jinx here, at least not on opening night. A seven catch, 154 yard night has Rider fans thinking Dressler will have another huge year.

3. Edmonton QB Ricky Ray. He only threw one touchdown pass, but he threw for 318 yards with no running game and with a wet football as it poured in Edmonton. Impressive.

Defence

1. Chip Cox-Montreal. 6 tackles and the game clinching TD against Calgary

2. Omarr Morgan-Saskatchewan. Two big interceptions and some great hustle to touch the ball on a fumble just before it went out of bounds to give the Riders one of their many turnovers.

3. Ryan Phillips-BC. He also had two picks...one of them going for a TD.

------
One has to wonder if Mike Weir and Stephen Ames are soon going to get some company as full time Canadians on the PGA Tour. Weyburn's Graham DeLaet continues to show he is one of the top golfers on the Canadian tour as he finished in a 3rd place tie in a tournament in Edmonton after winning in Calgary the weekend before. DeLaet brings his game to Dakota Dunes in Saskatoon for the Saskatchewan Open this week. I wouldn't bet against him. I'm not sure what steps DeLaet has to take to get his PGA card, but he can't be far off from getting that.
-------
What do you think was going through Hunter Mahan's mind on Sunday afternoon? Mahan shoots a 62 to put the pressure on Tiger Woods in the final round of the National. He was in the clubhouse as Tiger started his back nine with the two tied. Tiger kept everyone in suspense until he birdied 16 by draining one of those 20 foot birdies that he has drained oh so many times in the past. CBS kept showing Mahan getting ready for a possible playoff, but somehow I think in the back of his mind he knew he wasn't taking another meaningful shot today.
----
Saskatchewan's sexiest blogger or at least the self proclaimed sexiest blogger, Tyler MacMurchy asks a very good question and it goes to those who make shopping carts. The question being "Is there a better way to design shopping carts so that when a toddler is riding in the kids' seat, his swinging feet are NOT in the perfect position to kick a 5'9" guy in the junk?"
As someone who has felt the cruel kick of Annika's leg into the boys thus nearly sending me into the fetal position at Zellers or Sobeys, I wholeheartedly agree.
-------
I'm not buying this "trick shot". Are you???

Hey Mitch, where's the holier than thou bit today?? Ya know, the one where you claim to be supreme leader of football knowledge declaring all who question DD as idiots??

Is that blogger on a break today? Did he get his knuckles rapped a bit there huh?

We should all bow down in your presence. Thanks for blessing us with today's entry.

Mitch. Please acknowledge John Smith's mother for coming down into her son's basement and typing out the abusive posts both today and yesterday. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-SERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

I laughed hard at the Cohon statement about him being the Dos Equis guy because the wife and I saw him on the practice field and I said the same thing to her. He is definitely cooler than the other side of the pillow.

A definite no on the call to Abou. It would be like making a call to Dominguez.

You can find the Fountain of youth in Montreal by walking along Ste. Catherines St or Crescent St and stopping in at certain establishments. Young ladies will direct you upstairs to drink from it, but it will cost you. Did you not learn that in Montreal at GC Mitch. HA HA!!!

Chris G,

It's deadly accurate though buddy. That's the one thing you forgot. No one here has questioned the content of the post so put that in your pipe. And if you want Mitch Blair to be the center of your football universe than so be it. You know, you are capable of forming an opinion yourself eh? Albeit a real uneducated one.

Actually, I'm in YOUR mom's basement right now. She's gonna slide on down once she's done cleaning up!

John Smith...Chris G, or whatever anonymous name you want it to be.

So much for Graham DeLaet being in Saskatoon. The LP says today he isn't coming. Way to support the homefolk Graham. Many wanted to see you including maybe some wannabes.

Pedersen gets idiots writing on his blog and now you do too Mitch. Congrats!!!!

Hey John! Go back to whatever rock you crawled out from under.
You probably go to a Rider game wishing Danny and Roy were still here and that mediocrity ruled the way with Marvin Graves as the QB
Go back to the original post and at no time were you called an idiot(although its obvious you are).
