Stamps Get New DC

(From Stampeders.com)

The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that Rick Campbell is the team’s new defensive coordinator. Campbell takes over the position vacated by Dave Walkosky, who resigned earlier this week to become the special teams coordinator at Georgia Tech.

“When we promoted Dave from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator in December, Rick Campbell was very high on my list of candidates for the coordinator position,” said John Hufnagel, Stampeders head coach and general manager. “It was a difficult decision at the time but Dave allowed us to have continuity and grow our staff from within.

“But Rick is just one year removed from our organization, having been our running backs coach in 2010, and also brings a good degree of continuity. I really appreciate the fact that Edmonton allowed us the opportunity to talk to Rick again.”

Campbell spent 1999-2008 with the Edmonton Eskimos in the roles of special teams andlinebackers coach (1999), defensive secondary and special teams coach (2000-04) and defensive coordinator (2005-08). In 2009, he became Winnipeg’s defensive backs and special teams coordinator. He joined the Stampeders for the 2010 season. Campbell spent the 2011 season with Edmonton as its assistant head coach and special teams coordinator.

Campbell started his coaching career at the University of Oregon, where he was defensive secondary coach from 1996-98.

“Rick is a well-respected coach,” said Hufnagel. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and has a great deal of experience in all three phases of the game.”

Meanwhile, Walkosky was named the Stamps’ defensive coordinator on Dec. 23, 2011 following his first season in the CFL as the Stamps’ linebackers coach. Prior to his time with the Stamps, Walkosky was head coach at Tiffin University in Ohio for three years.
