What A Night!

Organizers of the 2009 CIS womens basketball championship have to be grinning from ear to ear and why not. One only had to be in the CKHS last night or be watching the game on "The Score" to see how electric is was inside the facility as the hometown U of R Cougars advanced to tonight's championship game with a convincing 86-68 win over Windsor. As crazy it was last night, I expect it to be moreso tonight as the Cougars take on number one ranked Simon Fraser in a 6 o'clock start. This will be a great basketball game and while Simon Fraser is number one, they will certainly have to battle a pro-Regina crowd that will be hanging from the rafters. Someone said last night there has to be around 25-hundred in here...it wouldn't surprise me.

One of the best things I saw was an appearance by those who have helped put this team on the map and keep it there. Former coaches Christine Stapleton and Jeff Speedy are both in Regina for the event. Stapleton is here to do TV work for the score and Speedy is here as a spectator. Christine made this team a national power, Speedy continued with that and Dave Taylor has continued on as well. If Regina should win tonight, someone should think about getting a picture of "The Bronze Baby" with all three coaches because that trio should be recognized along with the many great players that have come through the program. Good luck to the home side!!

After their comeback win over the Tigers on Friday, the Pats couldn't make it two in a row as they were beaten by Brandon 2-1. P-A and Edmonton both had the night off so Regina is still five back of the two teams they need to catch for that 8th and final playoff spot. Regina has four games left including tonight's battle in Moose Jaw. The Oil Kings have four games left including a home game against Lethbridge tonight while the Raiders have three games left including a game against Regina later this week. One other game last night saw the Hurricanes beat Saskatoon 4-3. As good as Saskatoon is and take nothing away from them, I don't think I would want to play the Hurricanes in the first round. Remember they have three first rounders on their team in Boychuk, Beach and Sbisa and this is a team that went to the WHL final before losing to Spokane. As it stands now, the Blades and Canes would meet in the first round. If it comes to fruition, it could be the best first round matchup and it could be an upsetting verdict for Lorne Molleken's men.

Did the NHL give the goalie the night off last night. The Hurricanes got 9 in a win over Tampa, the Blue Jackets got 8 over Detroit, the Islanders had 7 in a victory over the Devils and Ottawa turned the red light on 6 times to get the "W" over Buffalo. Maybe we need to shrink the nets or give goalies bigger equipment. (Its tough to have the sarcasm ooze out of a written statement instead of a spoken one isn't it!!)

Humboldt will not be Hockeyville 2009. Humboldt finished 2nd in the final voting with the winner being Terrace B-C.

A-Rod will miss the first month and a bit of the baseball season as he will undergo surgery to fix that hip problem

Rampage Jackson wins the main event at UFC 96 as he beats "The Dean of Mean" Keith Jardine in a unanimous decision. Here's the whole write-up from ESPN.com for all you MMA fans....

Telemiracle is on? I knew it was coming but I didn't know it was this weekend! Has Saskatoon become the permanent home for the annual 20 hour telethon now. Beverley Mahood continues to look her fine self. Who's kidding who....she is a lottery pick if you know what I mean and if you don't you will know when I say she is high on the draft board!! Bob McGrath just continues ticking...how old is he now anyways. How cool would it be with the event in Saskatoon if "The Eagles" just showed up for a song or two before heading to Credit Union Centre this afternoon. Its something those in attendance would never, ever forget.

The Weather Network says the chilly temperatures will continue most of this week. HUZZ-ZAHHHH!!!!
