Something To "Mitch" About

We did it! We got through what was a brutally cold weekend and I think for the most part, we are none the worse for wear. In fact, I think we more than ready for what was thrown at us. I went out Saturday afternoon and it appeared the weather wasn't keeping anyone in as it seemed like a normal Saturday when it comes to traffic. It even appeared to warm up some on Sunday night. Lets hope that is the last of it. I will still take the cold over the snow any day of the week, but that was just beyond ridiculous.

What a great weekend at the University of Regina as the CIS 2014 Womens Volleyball Championships were held. In the end, the University of Manitoba Bisons took the title beating UBC in the final. The T-Birds were heavily favoured having won six straight national titles, but Manitoba showed on the weekend they were the best team right from their first game Friday.

The host Cougars did themselves quite proud as they finished 6th. They put on a great show Friday night against UBC and took the first set from the #1 ranked T-Birds while coming close to taking the 2nd set as the crowd was buzzing. After beating the Ontario champs from McMaster on Saturday, they battled Trinity Western right to the end in the 5th place game before losing in 5 sets. Melanie Sanford's squad had nothing to be disappointed of with their play.  All in all it was a great show with the sport of volleyball being showcased in Regina. Nearly all of Regina's media outlets were out to check things out and help promote the sport  which was good to see as well as volleyball doesn't get a lot of coverage around these parts.

--
It is safe to say the Cougar womens hockey team will be a tired bunch after a memorable weekend that ended in heartbreak. Those in Saskatoon who saw it saw a definite classic as the Huskies and Cougars went to overtime in all three games of the Canada West final with the Huskies prevailing in double overtime in Game 3. In all the two teams played 287 minutes instead of the 18 you would expect. Its a damn shame the only ones to really witness it were those at the Rutherford Arena.
--

--I saw highlights of the Penguins-Hawks game outside in the snow. LOVED IT!!! Here's a question for you---if you were starting a team would you take Sid or Toews?  Sid has the flash and dash, but I honestly think Toews is a more complete player and a better leader.

--Its time for the Vancouver Canucks to do something with Roberto Luongo. It is obvious this team has no desire to have him in their future with the latest being the decision not to start him in the outdoor game at BC Place. Starting backup Eddie Lack is a slap in the face to Luongo from the Canucks and embarrasses him. Why are the Canucks doing this? They are the ones who saddled him with the huge contract he has so it can't be that and if it is, then others should be paying the price. The Hockey News' Adam Proteau labeled the Heritage Classic as the Heritage Ic, because the "class" is gone. I couldn't agree more.

--I don't know if its just because of the weather or the fact the Oilers are one or two levels beyond suck, but I can't wait for baseball to get going, How much longer till opening day?

--If you are a baseball fan, you have to go to the Regina Red Sox dinner with guest speaker Jose Canseco. How can you not? I don't know what Jose can and can't talk about, but he could be on stage for hours answering questions and telling stories.

--I missed the U of R Rams dinner since I was working for Access at the volleyball championships. A couple of people have told me it might have been the best Rams dinner ever. Joe Theismann was apparently a  huge success as well and he had several interesting things to say. Sometimes you wish you could be in more than one spot at one time but ya can't.

--Another Telemiracle is in the books and another 5 million plus has been donated. Nice  job Saskatchewan!! Telemiracle co-host Beverly Mahood was in the CKRM studios on Friday. Alas, I was not. SIGHHHHHH!!!!

--Congratulations to the Regina Pats for making the playoffs. Malcolm Cameron and Chad Lang did what many thought they wouldn't do this year. I still say the team finishes first in the East, but it will be no easy road. You have to like what the future holds though as this team should have a lot of key players return for next season---guys like Klimchuk, Wapple, Burroughs and Sam Steel. Get excited Regina, I think the days of bad hockey at the Brandt Centre have come to an end.

--The Jon Ryan Charity Golf Classic is coming back for a 2nd year. The Regina born punter of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks (god I love typing that phrase) tweeted out the info on the weekend. Go to http://www.jonryancgc.com/ for more information.

--The Tampa Bay Buccaneers unveiled their new jerseys Monday morning. Here ya go.....

--Michael Ramirez, I give you the Wisers Clap for this move. Michael Ramirez is an offensive lineman at a Houston area high school. He took to Twitter to ask a 20 year old Houston Texans cheerleader if she would be his prom date. She said absolutely if you get thousand 10-thousand retweets. He did and she is living up to the promise. Well done Michael, well done!

--That's all I got. Have a great week!

It was a great weekend at volleyball. I played the sport in school, but that was it. Those women can really play the game and the power they bring is unreal.

Re: Pats

The Pats are going to the playoffs and a buzz is coming back. Just imagine what it might have been like if we had A) a competent GM and B)a GM (Lang) who was allowed to do things without being vetoed. It certainly isn't hard to see what the problem was.

Great coverage on the womens volleyball Scruffy. Those are some great athletes and not too tough on the eyes either.

Don't know if you can answer this Mitch, but I will ask.
I was glad to see Access do a lot of games from the CKHS this weekend. but why didn't you do the Cougar game Saturday and Sunday. I would think those would be the games you would want to show along with the final. Just curious.

Toews has more leadership and may be a better all around player, but Sid has a rare offensive talent. Its a great debate.

Thumbs up to the kid in Texas!

Those Tampa jerseys may be uglier than those lime green things the Seahawks trotted out a few years ago.

Will the "hate Parker" movement ever come to an end. The guy is seemingly as popular as Durant. He fell on his sword and gave up day to day control of the team. Yes, the team has flourished since he left, but to keep belitting Parker is getting a little tiresome. In other words, give it a rest Matt!

Lynch retired. Are you next? I hope so!

Is it safe to assume you will be Ryan's caddy at the golf tournament?
