Was He The Toughest Ever?

Needless to say, there was a little shock when news of Bob Probert's passing hit. At the time of writing this, I hope drugs and alcohol were not involved in his collapse and ultimate death, but then again, maybe it was the drugs and alcohol he had already taken just catching up with him.

When passing the information on at work, a chat developed as to where Probert ranked when it comes to all-time tough players. Probert played in an era where fighters were not criticized the way they are now. In fact, they were glorified. I twittered today wondering how Probert would fare against Derek Boogaard and then the names started coming. Tie Domi, Joe Kocur, Ken Baumgartner, Dave Manson and the guy I thought might have been the toughest of them all--Dave Brown. The thing Probert had that the others didn't is he had a goal-scorers touch. He had 62 points in the 1987-88 season along with a whopping 398 penalty minutes.

Those that know me know I watch Monday Night Raw on a weekly basis whether it be live or on tape. I love this angle involving the NXT Rookies and I thought Monday's show was pretty good. Two things came out of this show as far as I'm concerned. 1) I am not buying that Stone Cold Steve Austin is the "mystery" general manager calling the shots and 2) I think John Cena is going to go from hero to heel perhaps as early as next week. If this does happen, it will be interesting to see how quick of a turn Cena takes and if the WWE universe buys it.

Semi final 1 at the World Cup goes today with Holland taking on Uruguay. You would have to think the Dutch would advance to Sunday's final, but you can never count out a South American team. This one should be good. It won't be as good as Germany-Spain tomorrow which is a game that could have very well been the final.

How does Joey Votto react to not being picked for the National League All-Star team. The Canadian homers twice for the Reds as they beat the Mets 8-6. Votto now has 21 homers and is being seen as an MVP candidate. Over in the American League, Canadian Justin Morneau is being considered an MVP candidate. What would be said if a pair of Canadians won their respective league MVP's. Imagine a Reds-Twins World Series and the publicity Canada would get.

The Red Sox beat Moose Jaw 6-2 on Monday night. I put that in for those that may not listen to CKRM, watch Global and CTV or read the Leader Post.

I think the first CFL stars of the week will come out Tuesday. Darian Durant is a shoo-in for offensive player of the week is he not?

To those who have asked the question (and in some cases been very rude to two people which is why your comments aren't and won't be posted), you'll have to tune in to find out.

I'm going to rate him as the toughest ever as he could also play the game. He was also the standard by which all other guys were measured. If you wanted to "make your bones" you had to go through Probert.

Maybe as a pure fighter he would rank third as I have Dave Brown #1, and Stu Grimson #2. It's very hard to rank because Probert was the guy everyone wanted to watch. His fights were epic, and 20 years later I can still remember the build up to the rematch he had against Troy Crowder who got the better of him the first go round.

I will rate him the toughest player I have ever seen in the NHL. He was something else.

Grimson rated in the top 2 by you, just proves how much knowledge you have. Two scouts just sent me a message telling me to look at your comments. What a complete buffoon you truly are. Having balls which Grimson had and being ranked in the top 10 as a heavyweight are two completely different topics.

Go to YOUTUBE and check the era, check the win - loss column. Your lost kid, your really lost.

Cena sells to much merchandise to be turned heel anytime soon. He was and would be great at it, but it doesn't make business sense for them right now.

Why would you not have Grimson in there? Brown and Grimson are to logical choices. You could list a pile of guys from that era. Obama picked good ones.
