2012 Brier Goes To Saskatoon

The Tim Hortons Brier is officially en route to Saskatoon.

Canada’s national men’s curling championship — which has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with this city — will run March 3-11, 2012. The Canadian Curling Association made that announcement at a Thursday-afternoon press conference.

“We’ve hosted the event three times since 1989 and set new standards each time, whether in attendance or in raising the bar in our delivery (of the event)," said Kerry Tarasoff, chair of the Saskatoon host committee.

The CCA makes no secret that Saskatoon is a favoured Brier site. Thursday’s announcement sends the national championship this way for the fourth time since 1989 and the third time since 2000.

Saskatoon helped the Brier make its first step into big cash and big crowds by drawing a then-record 151,538 spectators in 1989. Saskatoon set another Brier attendance record with 248,793 paid spectators in 2000 — a total eclipsed only by the 2005 event in Edmonton — and drew 238,129 in 2004.

Credit Union Centre, the site of next year’s Brier, underwent a seating expansion for the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championship.

The 2011 Brier is slated to be held in London, Ont.
