Edmonton Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman announced today that former Eskimo defensive back Kavis Reed has been hired as Head Coach, the 19th in the club’s history.
"This is a special day for our organization as we welcome an Eskimo back home. Kavis is a bright young man who loves this city and our franchise. I know he has terrific motivational skills and from a football perspective his coaching experience on offense, defence and special teams will be enormously beneficial as he takes this next step. Head coaches need to see the game from a big picture perspective and I believe Kavis' diverse coaching background will serve him well as he embraces this exciting opportunity."
"In a highly competitive division, I know we will draw from his energy, passion and total commitment as we pursue the goal of returning Edmonton football to the highest levels of success."
A veteran of nine seasons as an assistant with five CFL teams, Reed spent the 2010 season as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' Defensive Coordinator where he led a defensive unit that finished the season first in the league for allowing fewest net passing yards (4580) and second for fewest yards net offence (6203).
Prior to joining the Bombers, the South Carolina native was the Special Teams Coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders where he helped the team get to the Grey Cup Final for the second time in three years in 2009.
Beginning his coaching career in 2001 in Toronto as the Argonauts’ Defensive Backs Coach and Special Teams Coordinator, Reed has been on the coaching staff on five different CFL clubs in several different capacities; Toronto Argonauts (2001, 2007-2008), Ottawa Renegades (2003), Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2004-2006), Saskatchewan Roughriders (2009) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2010).
Before joining the coaching ranks, Kavis was star defensive back with the Green and Gold from 1995-1999. He ended his playing career with 205 defensive tackles and 20 interceptions for 481 yards; five of which were returned for touchdowns.
Kavis and his wife Darlene have two children, Tyra and Tarik, and reside in Edmonton full-time.
