The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that defensive lineman Brent Johnson, the club’s all-time leader in quarterback sacks and three-time CFL All-Star, has retired.
“Brent was an outstanding football player and a tremendous ambassador for our league,” said team owner, Senator David Braley. “His dedication to our organization and commitment to excellence will always be remembered. On behalf of the Lions, and with fondness, I wish him the very best as he moves on to the next phase of his career.”
Originally joining the Lions partway through the 2001 season, Johnson now departs the Lions after 11 seasons and 185 career appearances having never missed a game trough 184 opportunities up until the birth of his son in October of 2011.
The Lions’ third round selection in the 2001 Canadian Draft, Johnson enjoyed a standout stay at Ohio State University before embarking on a hall of fame-worthy CFL career recording 89 career sacks, an all-time mark for the Lions.
“Brent was a pleasure to coach and I am grateful for having had an opportunity to work with him over the years,” said Lions VP of football operations and GM, Wally Buono. “He is a quality person, a future hall of famer and a big part of our success over the past decade.”
The Kingston, Ontario native racked up 16 sacks and two interceptions on his way to a CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player and Most Outstanding Canadian award in 2006, and was a key part of a ferocious defense that led the way to the club’s fifth Grey Cup title that season.
Johnson was also the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian in 2005 as well as a three-time CFL All-Star, five-time West Division All-Star and two-time Grey Cup champion.
“Decisions of this magnitude are never easy, but looking back on the past eleven years I believe I surpassed my wildest expectations as a player,” said Johnson.
“I am honoured to have been a Lion for my entire career and it has been my privilege to play alongside some of the greatest athletes our league has seen. Thank you also to Lions fans everywhere, your support has been inspirational.”
