Tiger Woods has proven he is still bigger than the PGA Tour. All he had to do was step on the hallowed fairways of Augusta to prove it. Yes, Tiger shot his best ever first round at the Masters firing a 68,(So much for those demons I guess)but the story of Day 1 was not Tiger. It wouldn't have mattered if Tiger had shot a 78, if he had decided to get it on with someone on the 11th hole or if he played his round with a clowns nose on, Tiger was the story thus ignoring the achievements of Tom Watson and Fred Couples. Is this the seniors tour? The two old guys were the story of the day as far as I'm concerned. Couples shot a 6 under 66 while Watson brought back memories of last year's British Open by shooing a 5 under 67. Do Couples and Watson have any chance of being in the last pairing Sunday? I doubt it, but when you have rounds like what they had and bring back a taste of the past, it should be heralded and not shuffled under the carpet just because Tiger is back. As long as he is on the course, he will continue to be one tier above everyone else no matter what he has done.
By the way, how many jokes would there have been if Tiger had shot a "69"? One other thing, like many of you, I find the NIKE ad with Tiger just plain creepy and somewhat disturbing. Did you see Jimmy Kimmel's skit with Tiger's mom voicing the ad instead of Tiger's dad. She keeps hitting him with a newspaper asking him why he did what he did. HA!

I asked the question yesterday, and I'll ask it again today. Who is that guy in centerfield for the Toronto Blue Jays? It can't be the guy who has disappointed the last two years can it. Apparently it can. How about the start of Vernon Wells. Three homers in the team's first three games including a game-winner yesterday as Toronto takes two of three from Texas. If Wells can add some offensive punch to a lineup that includes Adam Lind and Aaron Hill, it will be bj's and candyfloss for everyone connected within the organization.

Major league baseball umpire Joe West has gone after the Yankees and Red Sox for playing slow. West says its pathetic and embarassing when the two teams play one another because they are so slow. Hey Joe, here's an idea. WIDEN THE STRIKE ZONE! When you are making pitchers basically throw the ball through an area the size of a pillbox, you are going to get a lot of 3-2 counts. Make the strike zone somewhat reasonable and make guys swing the bat. That might cure your problem.

The University of North Dakota is giving up its fight and will change its nickname to something else from the Fighting Sioux. I'm sorry, but I just don't understand that. How can the NCAA force North Dakota to change its name because its "racially insensitive", yet the Florida State Seminoles can just go through life with no problem. The same with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Oh yeah, the Seminoles and Irish make a lot of money for the NCAA. A lot more than some little old border school that is just known for hockey. Its a complete joke if you ask me.

If it was his last game at home, he went out in style. Mike Modano scored to tie it late in the 3rd and then scored in the shootout as Dallas beat Anaheim. Its believed Modano will call it a career once the season is over. I've never been fond of the ex P-A Raider (just chalk it up to all those Dallas wins over Edmonton in the playoffs), but I have just as much respect for him as I do for Joe Sakic. They are guys that went through everything with the franchise that selected them. They became the face of their franchises and when things weren't going well, they resisted trade and stayed with that team through thick and thin. I doubt as if it would ever happen, but I would love to see a Hall of Fame class with Sakic, Modano and Theo Fleury all going in at the same time.

It's another one of those stories that makes me go "NO, REALLY, I don't believe it". What am I talking about you may ask? Here ya go...

Parents acting bad at their kids' sports games. Who'd have guessed it?

There are some that aren't happy because the Cleveland Cavaliers didn't sit Lebron James against Toronto, but they didn't dress him for a game in Chicago thus giving the Bulls a huge advantage as they chase the Raptors for that last playoff spot. Newsflash!!! The Raptors aren't making the playoffs no matter what. Without pish-posh Chris Bosh and Turkish Flu, they aren't making it. They probably weren't going to make it with those guys.

Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun traces the Flames problem back to the trade with Phoenix at last year's trade deadline that brought them Olli Jokinen. I have a hard time disagreeing with what he says.

To the English teacher, if you don't like what you're seeing, then quit coming back, its that easy big boy!

Thats it for now. As you go into Friday, ask yourself this. If a movie was being made of your life, who would you have as the star? I'd go with Gary Coleman or Peter North! (Bonus points for you if you know who Peter North is)

Even more shocking Mitch, Vernon Wells actually has four homeruns in 3 games.
to play you I would go with Dom Delouise or fat Albert
Good eyes Jordan. He does have four in three. I'm so shocked I can't even type that. Thanks!
Couldn't agree with you more on the North Dakota thing Mitch. What a crock of crap! The NFL will never get the Redskins to change their name, and baseball will never ask the Braves to change their name because of the $$$$.
I was more impressed with Watson yesterday than Tiger. The guy just gets it done. Don't count him out. Remember last year's British Open.
Jordan beat me to the punch on VW. He has four homers this year. It must be a contract year.
Have a good weekend!

A Modano, Sakic, Fleury Hall of Fame class would be incredible. Those were the best days of the WHL when those three were roaming the ice. Its still hard to believe Ferraro had over 100 goals one year. We'll never see that again!
Alan
Eric Francis is right!
I echo Alan's sentiments!
Go Tom Watson!
Jason Alexander could play Scruffy!
