Up In Flames

The Stanley Cup playoffs will not visit Alberta. We all knew the Oilers were not making the playoffs a long time ago, but this Oiler fan can be soothed somewhat knowing the rebuilding effort has started and that the arch-rival Calgary Flames will take part in just as many playoff games as the Oil this year.
The Flames are done! A loss to the Sharks at the Saddledome combined with a Colorado shootout win over Vancouver means the Avalanche get the 8th and final playoff spot in the West. The question now is what do you do in the off-season in Calgary. I'm guessing Darryl Sutter will be walking the plank soon, will Brent follow or not. If the team gets blown up, who gets moved. Will it be Iggy? Will it be Kiprusoff? Could it be both? There is no way that a team that on paper has more talent than some of the other teams in the West is on the outside looking in come playoff time. When you have the likes of Iginla, Kiprusoff, Regehr, Bouwmeester, Langkow, etc. etc, you shouldn't have a problem getting into the playoffs. You should have clinched already. It is going to be a long, painful off-season in Cowtown. AWWWWW!!!! It really does break my heart! Then again, when you trade for at what one time was 1/5th of the Maple Leafs roster, what do you expect.

How much did the Mike Kelly experiment cost the Bombers in 2009. Word out of Winnipeg is the Bombers are posting a net loss this season of 1.2 million dollars. OUCH! This makes Paul LaPolice's jon that much tougher as he tries to get this team back on the road to respectability.

Medicine Hat gets back into their 2nd round series with Calgary with a 4-3 overtime win on home ice. That cuts the Hitmens series lead to 2-1. Game 4 is tomorrow. Game 4 of the SJHL final will also go tomorrow in Yorkton with the Terriers needing the win to even that series at two after losing in overtime 4-3 on home ice to LaRonge. The Ice Wolves now lead that best of 7 2-1. The winner heads automatically to the Royal Bank Cup seeing the event is being held in Dauphin, Manitoba this year with the host Kings already winning the MJHL title. A Dauphin-Yorkton Anavet Cup along with one and maybe two games between the two at the RBC would be simply chaotic.

The Randy Ferbey rink is no more---at least it will be in a couple of weeks. Ferbey has announced the Players Championship will be the last event for the Edmonton foursome that won four Briers and three Worlds and will go down as one of the greatest rinks to ever hit the ice. What makes this story better is that Ferbey is going to join Brad Gushue's rink. He will throw third stones for the Newfoundland rink as Jamie Korab decides to take a break. As for the other three members of the Ferbey team--Marcel Rocque, Scott Pfeiffer and David Nedohin. They all say they are taking time away from the game right now.

As you start your Wednesday, I give you one tip of advice....

Borrow money from pessimists. They don't expect it back.

The Flames have underachieved for years. Time for Daryl to go.

The Gushue rink just got more dangerous. It's too bad though that Ferbey wouldn't be able to play in the Brier though

The Flames are a complete mess. Like the Oilers, a complete rebuild is needed. Unlike the Oilers, Calgary has much more overall talent on its team with no youth coming up that will dazzle (ie: Eberle). Iginla's production or lack of it surely means a trade. Send him to Colorado for a couple of their young forwards who can score!

Whatever the Flames do, they can't get rid of Kipper. If it wasn't for him, one can only imagine where Calgary would be. How many times did he allow 2 only to see the Flames score just 1....like last night!
