New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Wednesday that the club has signed defensive lineman David Onyemata, the team’s fourth-round draft pick (120th overall) to a four-year contract. The team’s entire 2016 draft class is now under contract.
Onyemata, was selected by New Orleans in the fourth round (120th overall) out of the University of Manitoba. A 6-foot-4 inch, 300-pound native of Lagos, Nigeria, he appeared in 37 career games, finishing his collegiate career with 166 tackles, 9.5 sacks, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was voted a Canada West All-Star in both 2014 and 2015, and was part of the 2014 Canada West championship team. Onyemata, who became the first member of the Bisons program drafted into the NFL, was named a CIS first-team All-Canadian in 2015, after recording 50 tackles, five sacks, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over nine starts. Following his 2015 senior campaign, he was awarded the J.P. Metras Trophy, given annually to the top down lineman in CIS football.
Onmeyata was considered as the top prospect for the CFL draft, but his stock went down after being drafted by the Saints. He went to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 4th round with the 35th pick overall.
