Update on A-C

From Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette

Injured quarterback Anthony Calvillo has a bruised sternum, according to head coach Marc Trestman, who addressed the media Friday morning at Olympic Stadium.

Although Calvillo was expected to be released from Montreal General Hospital Friday morning, Trestman said he would continue to remain there, for precautionary reasons, but had suffered no structural damage.

Trestman was going to visit Calvillo, after going to the dentist, and before flying home to Raleigh, N.C. for the bye week in the schedule. Players won’t practice until next Friday, and the Als don’t play again until Sept. 3, at home, against British Columbia.

Calvillo was injured with 4:52 remaining in the second quarter of Thursday’s game, against Winnipeg, after being sacked by Odell Willis. Calvillo, who turns 38 on Monday, has sustained more hits and damage than usual this season, and was already playing with a dislocated index finger on his throwing hand.

He passed for 164 yards and two touchdowns against the Blue Bombers before departing. Montreal, leading 24-0 at the time, held on for a 32-17 victory, improving its record to 6-2.

Calvillo was replaced by Chris Leak, who led the Als to two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
