The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed import receivers Efrem Hill and Ernie Wheelwright to contracts. Financial details were not released.
“After our recent mini-camp in Florida, these two receivers warranted a future look, so we are excited to have the opportunity to bring them to training camp,” stated Roughrider General Manager Brendan Taman. “We fully expect them to push for a roster spot.”
Hill (6’1 – 185 lbs) spent the last two seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos. In five regular season games, the Samford product tallied 21 catches for 231 yards and one touchdown. Prior to signing as a free agent with the Eskimos in May, 2009, Hill spent two seasons with the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad. He had six receptions for 67 yards and one touchdown in pre-season action. He originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers in April, 2005. He spent majority of the season on the practice roster but was activated for the team’s final two regular season games and three playoff games.
Wheelwright (6’5 – 225 lbs) spent two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens after originally signing as an undrafted free agent in April, 2008. He was activated off the practice roster for three regular season games in his first season with Baltimore. Wheelwright played for the University of Minnesota Gophers and in 2007 had the second best pass-catching season in school history with 66 receptions for 775 yards and nine touchdowns in 12 starts.
