Ti-Cats Hire Assistants

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that head coach and director of football operations George Cortez has added three coaches to his staff. Veteran coach Jim Daley has been named special teams coordinator, Nelson Martin has been named defensive backs coach and Ryan Sheahan has been named running backs coach.

Daley most recently served as special teams coordinator with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2010 after spending the 2009 season with the Edmonton Eskimos as their defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.

Daley has 16 years of CFL experience and has held head coaching jobs with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2004-05) and Saskatchewan Roughriders (1996-98). He has previously worked alongside George Cortez with the Ottawa Rough Riders and Calgary Stampeders.

“I’m pleased to welcome Jim Daley as our special teams coordinator. I was always impressed by Jim’s work ethic, thorough preparation and drive for success during our time together in Ottawa and Calgary. His skills and experience make him a fine addition to our staff,” said Cortez.

Martin takes over as defensive backs coach after spending last year as a guest coach at Ticats training camp in addition to his role as a defensive assistant at the University of Ottawa. Previously, Martin has served as defensive backs coach with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues as well as a special teams assistant with the Ottawa Renegades. As a player, Martin suited up at safety for seven seasons with the B.C. Lions, earning the West Division’s Most Outstanding Canadian award in 1987.

“Nelson brings CFL experience as both a coach and player. He’s a great teacher and his coaching style will benefit our physical, aggressive secondary,” remarked Cortez.

Sheahan spent the last four years as an offensive assistant at Queen’s University, operating as assistant offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2011. He also served as a guest coach at the B.C. Lions training camp last season.

“Ryan is an impressive young coach from the CIS with valuable experience on offence. We’re happy to have him on our staff this season,” commented Cortez.
