CFL Had A November To Remember

TORONTO -- CFL.ca smashed records for unique visitors, total visits and total page views in the month of November, another sign that the Canadian Football League has tremendous momentum as it shifts its focus to the new year and the 2010 season.

Unique Visitors to CFL.ca in November were up 76% and surpassed the one million mark for the first time in history.

Consumption of exclusive and feature videos on CFL.ca continues to show dramatic increases, with over 300% growth in November.

Visits to CFL.ca grew by 78% in November compared to this time last year. And the resulting page views represented a 49% increase over one year ago.

“This year, we launched a new CFL.ca, as part of a new CFL Network of league and team sites, and the response to our content from fans and advertisers has been tremendous throughout the year, but especially during our playoffs and Grey Cup,” said Canadian Football League Commissioner Mark Cohon.

“These metrics for one of our most important digital properties mark an important breakthrough for our league. And they cap what has truly been a November to remember for the CFL. The record breaking performance of CFL.ca, on top of record television ratings for the Grey Cup game and Western Final, as well as a sold out Grey Cup and very strong attendance for our playoff games, made this one of the most successful periods in the long and storied history of the CFL.”

CFL.ca’s Live Play feature, which allows fans to track games and statistics play-by-play, produced a 194% increase in page views on Grey Cup Sunday compared to last year’s Grey Cup, with an average of over 30 minutes time spent.

Over the course of the month, the site provided advertisers with increased engagement levels, as fans flocked to CFL.ca for the latest news and video on the stretch run of the regular season, the CFL playoffs and the 97th Grey Cup, which turned out to be one of the most exciting and memorable Grey Cup games ever.

TSN recently reported that preliminary data from BBM Canada confirmed 6.1 million viewers watched the CFL championship game across the country – making it the most watched Grey Cup ever, as well as the most watched telecast of the year in Canada. More than 14 million Canadians, or nearly 43 per cent of the country’s population, watched the game in whole or in part. An incredible 8.351 million viewers were watching the Grey Cup broadcast at 9:49 ET on TSN and RDS as the Montreal Alouettes captured the Grey Cup with a field goal as time expired.

In addition, this year’s CFL Western Final was the most-watched CFL playoff game ever, with over two million viewers (2.142) on TSN and an additional 222,000 viewers on RDS, while 1.138 million viewers on TSN and another 603,000 viewers on RDS watched this year’s Eastern Final.

The Eastern Semi-Final in Hamilton (27,430) and Western Semi-Final in Calgary (31,356) featured strong crowds. The Eastern Final in Montreal had the largest crowd of the playoffs (53,792) and the Western Final in Regina (30,945) was a sellout. The Grey Cup Game in Calgary (46,020) sold out eleven weeks in advance.

“All of us at the Canadian Football League, from our Board of Governors to our teams, want to thank our fans for their support this year and this November,” Cohon said.

“Our league features tremendous players, but this season, a lot of the most impressive records were set by CFL fans.”
