The Toronto Argonauts announced Monday that the team has acquired quarterback James Franklin and a third-round selection in the 2018 CFL Draft from the Edmonton Eskimos in exchange for Canadian offensive lineman Mason Woods.
Franklin, a 6-2, 225-pound native of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has dressed for 52 games in three years with the Eskimos. In 12 appearances, the University of Missouri product has completed 116-of-176 pass attempts for 1,449 yards, 12 touchdowns and just one interception while rushing for 145 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries.
In his lone career start, a Week 20 showdown with the Argos in 2016, the 26-year old pivot completed 18-of-23 attempts for 335 yards and four touchdowns.

Not quite Mitch...
The Toronto Argonauts have acquired the rights to pending free agent quarterback James Franklin, the team announced Monday, after completing a deal with the Edmonton Eskimos.
Franklin is scheduled to become a free agent on February 13 but by making the deal, the general manager Jim Popp and the Argos brass retain exclusive negotiating rights with Franklin until that point. Should he reach free agency, he’s expected to be one of the most coveted players on the open market.
Actually Anon 1, you would be wrong. Franklin is now a member of the Argonauts and will be until February 13. It is no different than Bridge and other Rider free-agents. He stays on the roster until that date.
You are right in saying they acquire the rights, but this means Toronto now has the chance to sign him and not Edmonton. The Eskimos can no longer try to negotiate a deal with him.
Anon 2 right
Anon 1 wrong
Can only hope as a Rider fan now that he still gets to free agency, but I am guessing that doesn't happen.

Time for Jones to go to Plan B
Smart move by Edmonton to dump him out east and cross their green and yellow fingers that he signs there. Keep him out of the clutches of the Riders and Lions was important for the Edmonton for sure. Franklin may wait to see what the market is like and cash in, but there may be some attraction for him of starting out east and away from the fishbowl that is Rider Nation.
