Edmonton Eskimos slotback Fred Stamps underwent surgery early Saturday morning, the team announced via a press release.
The 29-year-old veteran had emergency abdominal surgery at a Winnipeg hospital. He was injured in Friday’s 28-16 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but finished the game.
“Fred was experiencing significant discomfort after the game,” Eskimos general manager Eric Tillman said in the release. “He was taken to hospital for tests, which determined that there was some internal bleeding and surgery was required.
“The surgery was successful and Fred will remain in hospital for a few more days. Our medical staff is projecting that he’ll be sidelined four to six weeks.”
Stamps is leading the Canadian Football League with 619 receiving yards this season was available post-game on Friday and didn’t seem in pain.
Stamps has been an integral part of the Eskimos offence and the team’s 5-1 start this season. His injury is a devastating blow to an already beleaguered receivers corps, which is currently missing Andrew Nowacki and Adarius Bowman.
The Eskimos will be in Montreal on Thursday to face the Alouettes.
