The
University of Regina Rams announced Tuesday their schedule for the 2017 season.
The Rams will have four home dates at the new Mosaic Stadium, which they opened
up last year with a win over Saskatchewan at the SaskTel Fall Classic.
But
this year, Saskatchewan will be the only Canada West team that won’t pay a
visit to the new stadium during the regular season. The Rams have a home-heavy
first half of the conference schedule, as they’ll play three games at Mosaic
Stadium in the month of September alone. They’ll start off the year against UBC
(Sept. 1) before heading to Calgary for a Week 2 matchup, then host Alberta
(Sept. 16) and Manitoba (Sept. 23) in back-to-back games to reach the halfway
mark of the Canada West slate.
A
road game at Saskatchewan (Sept. 29) will bring the Rams into the bye week and
after a road game at Alberta (Oct. 14), the U of R will host Calgary (Oct. 21)
in the team’s lone home game of the second half of the schedule. The Rams will
then travel to UBC to close out the conference schedule with a game against the
Thunderbirds on Oct. 28.
The
two Canada West semifinals and the Hardy Cup will be hosted on the Nov. 4 and
Nov. 11 weekends, respectively, with the conference champion scheduled to host
the Mitchell Bowl against the RSEQ champion on Nov. 18. The winner of the
Mitchell Bowl will advance to the Vanier Cup, which will be held on Nov. 25 at
Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ont.
NOTES: The Rams also have
an exhibition game on the schedule, as they’ll play Calgary at the Methanex
Bowl in Medicine Hat, Alta. for the third consecutive season ... the Rams/Dinos
exhibition tilt is scheduled for Aug. 23 ... with only eight fifth-year players
on the 2016 roster, the Rams will return most of the team that finished with a
6-2 record and in first place in the Canada West standings for the first time
in program history ... leading the team’s returners will be Hec Crighton Trophy
winner Noah Picton along with Canada West all-stars Danny Nesbitt, Jeff Propp,
and Ryan Schienbein ... All-Canadian slotback Mitchell Picton also has a season
of eligibility remaining, but is eligible to be selected in the 2017 CFL Draft.
