The Humboldt Broncos may be the number one team in Canada according to the Canadian Junior Hockey League, but they aren’t the top team in the SJHL. In a battle of division leaders last Tuesday in Yorkton, the hometown Terriers jumped out into a 3-0 lead only to see Humboldt get two in the first minute of the 3rd. Yorkton held on for the 3-2 win handing the Broncos their first defeat of the year.
Despite the fact the Broncos are not the top team in the SJHL, they are considered the top team in Canada this week by the Canadian Junior “A” Hockey League. When their latest top 20 rankings went out Sunday night, Humboldt was number one followed by Yorkton at number 5.
The Weyburn Red Wings and the Neepawa Natives of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League pulled off a trade that you won’t see every day. In fact, you might be hard pressed to remember a deal like this going down before and it might be a long time before you see one like it happen again. The two teams made a four player trade in which two brothers go to one team for another pair of brothers.
The Wings acquired forwards Blake and Scott Kirkham from the Natives in exchange for forward Daniel Adams and defenceman Dmitry Adams. In 45 years, Wings GM Ron Rumball says he has never seen a trade like this before. Trust Ron to be the one to help engineer such a deal.
Two teams, including the defending champions, have gotten stronger offensively. The La Ronge Ice Wolves were more than happy to welcome Logan Herauf to the club. Herauf, acquired this past summer from Melville for goalie Kyle Jahraus, was thought to be done in the SJHL after hooking on with New Mexico of the NAHL, but after playing six games for that team he was released so he is now in La Ronge. Herauf will give the Wolves a spark.
The Kindersley Klippers are awaiting their latest player. Local product D Jay McGrath was sent back to the SJHL by the WHL’s Everett Silvertips. McGrath played 52 games for the Tips last year, but was not in their plans this season. He will join an already talented group of forwards on the Klippers.
The Battlefords Stars, seen by many as a contender, have gotten off to a rough start this season. Head coach Ken Pearson didn’t rattle the ship this past week, but he gave it a good shake. Pearson sent one of his top forwards—Josh Daley—to Dauphin of the Manitoba Junior League for forward Keith Grondin. While frustrated, Pearson says his team is not that far off and that a couple of more moves need to be made.
SHERWOOD PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Justin Buzzeo (Humboldt)
Justin Buzzeo (1990-Windsor, ON) has moved up to 2nd in league scoring after helping the Broncos win two of their three games this week. Buzzeo had three goals and three assists to give him 16 points on the season
SHERWOOD DEFENCEMAN OF THE WEEK – Mitch Boucher (Notre Dame)
The Notre Dame Hounds are having some problems putting pucks into the net this season, but they have been very good in keeping pucks out of their net. One of the reasons for that is the play of Mitch Boucher (1992-Moose Jaw, SK). The Hounds split their two games this week, but in a 3-2 win over Flin Flon, Boucher was big at both ends of the ice as besides stopping a potent Flin Flon offence, he also managed a goal and two assists.
SHERWOOD GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK – Devin Peters (Yorkton)
There are many reasons as to why the Yorkton Terriers are sitting atop the Sherwood Conference at this moment, but one of the big reasons is the play of Peters (1990-St. Andrews. MB). Peters was in net for two of Yorkton’s three wins this week stopping 86 of 91 shots. Peters is the league leader in wins with 6.
POWER RANKINGS
1. YORKTON TERRIERS – The Terriers lead the league with 17 points and came away the winner in a battle of division leaders this week beating previously unbeaten Humboldt.
2. HUMBOLDT BRONCOS – Despite losing their first of the year in Yorkton, Dean Brockman’s crew is looking very good in the first month of the season. The Broncos are letting everyone know they would not only like to win the RBC in 2012 when they host, but win it in 2011 as well.
3. KINDERSLEY KLIPPERS – This might be the most talented group on paper in the league and they don’t have Andrew Dommett back yet. When he comes back, the sky might be the limit
4. ESTEVAN BRUINS – The Bruins once again split their two games this week, but they are right in the thick of things in the Sherwood Conference.
5. MELFORT MUSTANGS- The addition of Charles Corsi by the Mustangs might be the best acquisition any team has had early on in the season
6. NIPAWIN HAWKS – The early season play of Eli Lichtenwald means teams can’t concentrate on stopping Andrew Spafford. The addition of Jamie Johnson looks to be paying early dividends as well
7. LA RONGE ICE WOLVES- Bob Beatty takes his club out on a four game road trip this week. The Wolves have gotten better with the return of Logan Herauf. How much better?
8. FLIN FLON BOMBERS- A 1-3 road trip was not what Mike Reagan was hoping for as his team falls to 500
9. MELVILLE MILLIONAIRES- Inconsistency is the word in Melville. If Jamie Fiesel can get a consistent effort from his squad, they will move up
10. WEYBURN RED WINGS – The Wings split their two games this week, but after giving up 21 goals in 2 games last week, they only gave up 4 this week. Of course, they did only score 4.
11. BATTLEFORDS STARS – Ken Pearson is revamping what is a talented roster. This team won’t stay in this spot for long once everyone gets on the same page.
12. NOTRE DAME HOUNDS- Someone has to be on the bottom, and in a league where parity is alive and well, the Hounds get that distinction this week.
