Too Little, Too Late

We know the Regina Pats aren't going to make the playoffs for a 2nd consecutive year, but they aren't going to go out with a whimper. Regina making it two straight wins with a 6-3 win over visiting Prince Albert Saturday night. It would be nice to see the team end the season with a couple of more positive results so returnees can go home with something to smile about. Speaking of returnees, one has to wonder already what Jordan Weal will do as an 18 year old. He could end up leading the league in scoring as a 17 year old, but I think his teammate-Jordan Eberle may get that honor. Eberle had 4 assists in his second to last home game while Weal had a goal and two helpers. It means Eberle now has 102 points on the season with Weal at 99. Eberle is the first Pat to hit the 100 point plateau since Robert Petrovicky in the 97-98 season. The last time the Pats had two players go over 100 points was the 95-96 season when Josh Holden and Rhett Gordon both surpassed the century mark.
The win also basically assured Swift Current a spot in the playoffs. The Broncos are six up on the Raiders with Prince Albert having just four games remaining. If Swift Current finishes 8th, they will meet Calgary in the first round. The Broncos won't have a home rink to play in because of the world womens curling championships. I would think they might go to Lethbridge, but there are whispers out there that the Brandt Centre might see a WHL playoff game or two this spring. Stay tuned!

Have there been any Rob Vanstone sightings since the Vancouver Olympics ended? I have seen or heard nothing from "the rumpled scribe" since last week. It is my guess he became so enamoured with luge and skeleton that he stayed in Whistler to start training for the 2014 games. Live the dream Rob! Live the dream!

Ben Roethlisberger. What are you thinking? Perhaps you would be better off becoming a hermit. After getting through a real flimsy accusation of sexual assault last year, he has been accused of another one in Georgia. This is also the same Ben Roethlisberger who suffered severe injuries after getting flipped off his motorcycle when he wasn't wearing a helmet. You are a two time Super Bowl winning quarterback(although I will only officially recognize one---yes I'm still bitter!) and you are one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. It is time for you to grow up a little.....no, its time for you to grow up a lot.

Who has Sidney Crosby's stick and gloves from last Sunday's gold medal games at the Olympics? More importantly, who has the puck? Screw the stick and gloves, I would want the puck! Did anyone get that!

After winning Olympic gold, there should have been a spot in the Brier for Kevin Martin.

The Oscars are tonight. I couldn't care less! I don't really understand the allure of the Oscars or a lot of other award shows for that matter. How many Oscars did "Old School" win? Exactly! Is "The Hangover" nominated this year? How about "Paul Blart Mall Cop".

Last, but certainly not least. My 15 year old daughter in her first year at trying out the sport finished 2nd in the city on Saturday in her weight class at the city wrestling championships. It should have been first and many of us thought it was had it not been for a mistake by the drawmaster. OOPS! Regardless, she pinned the girl that won the weight class so she's the people's champ as far as I'm concerned. She was the only member of her high school wrestling team to take either first or second today and there were many representing the school. Provincials are next weekend and I'm sure she will trade today's silver in for gold next weekend. If only I could get her to find a place to stash a foreign object and learn how to take the steel chair to an opponent, I'd be so happy. Oh yeah, this is the real wrestling.

As you go into your Sunday, I leave you with this.....

There's no point in being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes.

I know everyone salivates over every move Eberle performs and with good reason, but when all is said and done, Weal could surpass Eberle and many others with his play. This guy is simply outstanding and yet he flies under the radar because of Eberle. It will be interesting to see what he does next year when he is the guy.

My boy had a chance to get Jordan's autograph at the end of the game. I think he must have signed at least 200 things and he was so nice to everyone. He even asked my boy how he was doing in hockey this year and how many goals he had scored. Andy couldn't stop talking about that on the way home and at practice today. I hope he goes to Edmonton and lights it up and that he never forgets his Regina roots.
