Silencing The Yankees

If Roy Halladay isn't the best pitcher in baseball right now, it has to be Cliff Lee. Remember, these two guys could have been teammates, but Philly decided to ship Lee to Seattle so they could get Halladay.
Lee was brilliant at Yankee Stadium as he struck out 13 over 8 innings as Texas hammered the Bronx Bombers 8-0 to take a 2-1 lead in the ALCS. They should be up 3-zip were it not for that 8th inning meltdown in Game 1. The Game 4 pitching matchup has AJ Burnett going for the Yankees and he has been junk down the stretch. The starter for the Rangers will be Tommy Hunter. I don't know if Al Cherny will be catching for him. This game will be on Sportsnet, but it should be on CBC after hockey. For the younger generation reading this, ask Mom or Dad what that means. In a universe that didn't have cable TV, many young Canadians in the 70's knew exactly who Tommy Hunter was. Was he the George Stromboulopoulos of the 70's...OK thats going a little far.

As expected, the Rider Nation is furious with their football team for losing Sunday's first place showdown to the hated Stampeders. Jim Daley continues to get beaten up, people still question Ken Miller's decision making, the o-line is crap and the defence can't stop the run. That's just the tip of the iceberg. That being said. this football team if they win out would win 12 games in 2010 which was two more than 2009 albeit they won't finish first. A lot has been made of the Riders inability to run the football with Wes Cates being one of the whipping boys. Was it just me on Sunday or did Calgary just pin their ears back and disrespect the run. The Riders are going to throw the football---they are a throwing team. If this team is going to keep the defence on its toes, they have to make a team respect the run. There's three weeks to fix that problem. I suggest you start on it at practice today. Yes, strengthening that run defence might also be job number 1 on the to do board as well.

Anyone who doesn't think Scott Schultz has a future in football broadcasting hasn't listened to "The Sportscage". Number 96 has been a tremendous addition to that show and he showed why again yesterday as he ripped the Riders for what happened Sunday. Matt Dominguez wasn't very kind to the team either in his X's and O's segment on CTV. Dominguez is also outstanding on CKRM's pre and post-game shows. I will have the pleasure of working with Schultzie again on Friday when I fill in for Rod seeing he is gone to Edmonton. If Dominguez wanted to come in and make it a triple-team, I could just sit back and let those two break it down.

Its been more than 24 hours since I consumed a double-down. I'm still walking. That's a win is it not? I recommend one, but I don't recommend having two---especially at one sitting like Saskatchewan's self proclaimed sexiest blogger did on Sunday night. I have not looked to see if his obit was in the paper today. I believe he is OK. He better be because I and many others will be invading his home for UFC 121 Saturday night. Lesnar vs Velasquez. Can't wait!

Is it too much to ask a local cable company that provides outstanding cable, internet and phone service to show a little love to its local sports show and give it some publicity?

What do you think about the NFL deciding to start suspending guys for helmet-to-helmet hits instead of fining them. There were many hard hits on the weekend including one to Regina's Jon Ryan that might keep the Seahawks punter out of next week's game against Arizona. Football is a violent game, but is it getting too violent. With the amount of guys that we see getting helped off the field on a weekly basis, one could argue it is but isn't that what we the fans want. Isn't that the type of game that football markets itself with. I want to see the best players in the game do what they do best, and that includes guys like Ray Lewis and James Harrison knocking the snot out of someone if the chance arrives. Yes, some are reckless with their helmets and perhaps what they need is losing a game cheque or two, but that will soften up the game will it not?

Does anyone care around here that the NBA season is starting soon?

Regina needs a theatre in the East end.

If Crosby or Ovechkin don't win the MVP this year, its because of Steven Stamkos. Where did he go in hockey drafts? I'm sure he had to have gone in the top 10 in many. If he went after that, what were those who picked ahead of him thinking.

Monday's edition of Two and a Half Men might have been the funniest one I have ever seen. That includes the Charlie Waffles episode.
-----
If the Rams beat Calgary this week, it means a home playoff game. That will mean a first in Regina. It will mean the Rams, Riders and Thunder will all have a home playoff game. I like that!

Colonel Russell Williams was one "twisted" individual and saying "twisted" might be kind. Have you read some of the stuff coming out of his trial? On a side note, none of that lingerie that was presented as evidence belongs to Henry Burris does it? Oh wait, that was a joke that should have been made last week.
-----
Rider fans still hate Henry, but have they not realized that if Burris hadn't of left, that Darian Durant is probably never wearing green. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have Durant than Hank. To each their own though.
----
Eddie Johnson says he is concerned about his punting if he has to start placekicking. Talking to Eddie a few times, I can't see how he would be concerned with anything. He might be the coolest person on the planet.

If you were under house arrest and you lived in a mobile home, wouldn’t you be able to go anywhere you want?

Regina does need a theatre in the East end. Wasn't there supposed to be one a long time ago and the city said no, it had to be downtown?

Both Schultz and Dominguez are so good on CKRM. They break it down and they pull no punches. You would think your former employer would have tried to grab one of these guys, but then again considering their programming wizards that likely explains it. Its why I listen to the Cage every day from the time I get off work till I get home and then turn my radio off for the day.

I wonder what some of Schultz's former teammates think of what he is saying. The bottom line is "He's right!"

Cliff Lee will look great in a Yankees uniform next year. Did you hear Nolan Ryan after the game? Someone asked him how much it will cost the Rangers to keep Lee and he said ask those guys over there pointing to the Yankee locker room.

HA HA HA on Tommy Hunter. Didn't he perform at Casino Regina earlier this year?

Thank you, Mitch, for thinking 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine.

Iron Mike says he's finally going to eat a Double Down on Saturday as we watch the UFC. I think that sounds like the perfect heavyweight meal to accompany a little heavyweight violence, don't you?

What's the NBA?

Colonel Williams should be sent to the front lines of Afghanistan with no protection and a sign that says "I HATE THE TALIBAN".

Putting Hugh Charles into the backfield might have other teams respecting the run. It baffles me why our coaching staff can't do with Charles what Calgary does with Cornish.

A discount theatre would look good where the old Extra Foods was on Dewdney in that strip mall.

Schultz is, was and always will be a beauty. His frank honesty is refreshing.
