Willie Jefferson & Ed Gainey Named CFLPA All-Stars
The CFL Players Association announced its all-star team for the 2017 season, and two members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders are on it.
The two shouldn’t come as a surprise to Rider fans. They are defensive lineman Willie Jefferson and defensive back Ed Gainey.
Jefferson led the Riders with eight quarterback sacks, and led the CFL with 37 quarterback pressures.
Gainey led the CFL with a career-high 10 interceptions, including four interceptions in an August game against B.C.
The CFLPA’s All-Star Team is selected this way: only players who have suited up for 12 games or more are eligible, and it is the players who select the squad. Players only vote for those against whom they line up against in games – example, receivers vote on defensive backs and vice-versa; defensive linemen vote on offensive linemen and vice versa. Positional coaches are also asked to vote. All players and head coaches vote for the head coach and special-teams player.
Each voter is asked to rank three players on their ballot, with first-place votes counting for three votes, second-place votes are worth two points and third-place votes are worth one.
This year the CFLPA received 622 ballots.
