Saskatchewan Roughrider head coach Ken Miller announced today the Roughriders have signed import offensive linemen Bobby Harris and Andrae Townsel to new contracts. Financial details were not released.
Harris (6’3 – 310 lbs) was a two-year starter at Ole Miss in 2004 and 2005 where he was a teammate with current Rider Belton Johnson. He signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers in 2006 and spent the 2007 season as the starting left tackle for Frankfurt in NFL Europe. Harris spent last season with the Arena League’s Orlando Predators. In his rookie season, Harris was elected a team captain and was named to the league’s all-rookie team and was also named an all-league performer.
“Bobby is a young man we have been pursuing for the past couple of years,” stated Miller. “He has excellent feet for a big man, and he’s a polished pass protector. Bobby has been a two-time all-star at the pro level (NFL Europe and Arena) and at only 25 should continue to improve.”
Townsel (6’4 – 300 lbs) played his collegiate football at Howard University where he was a starter in his senior year. The 25-year old signed with the NFL’s Washington Red Skins in 2007, but was released at the end of training camp.
“Joe Womack has studied film on Andrae and he liked the athleticism he showed for a big man,” continued Miller. “We believe Andrae will adapt to the speed of the Canadian game and expect him to bring a high level of competition to training camp.”
