Would the NHL dare suspend the league's MVP??? They should! Alex Ovechkin was guilty of a knee on knee hit that took out Penguin Sergei Gonchar for most of Game 4 and probably Game 5 and then who knows how long. Its a suspendable act. I can't see the league doing it because it is Ovechkin but again it sends the wrong message. What makes this even more interesting is the best of seven series is tied at two so not having Alex the GR8 would certainly leave the Capitals at a disadvantage. It might have been an easier decision for the league to give Ovechkin a game had Washington been up 3-1 in this series, but Pittsburgh's 5-3 win means the series is now a best of three. Game 5 is today. Another story for the Caps is Sergei Varlamov. After playing so well in these playoffs, Varlamov let two softies in. It had the Hockey Night in Canada crew wondering if Varlamov's bubble had burst. Ron McLean also noting it was at this time last year when Carey Price started to falter. The HNIC crew had best not forget Jonas Hiller looked human for the first time in the playoffs in the Game 4 Anaheim loss to Detroit. Speaking of the HNIC crew, it was fairly obvious they were rooting for the Penguins in this one. The Caps aren't happy with HNIC, and for good reason. Mike Milbury and Kelly Hrudey took a couple of subtle shots at the Caps before the game started and there were no tears shed by everyone on HNIC after Pittsburgh had evened things up.
Eric Staal owns the Boston Bruins. He has been a one man wrecking crew for Carolina in this 2nd round matchup and his play has the Canes just one win away from knocking off the top seed in the East. Staal had a pair in a 4-1 win. When does someone start giving Paul Maurice some credit??? When does the Toronto media start to realize that Maurice was basically working with scraps when there which shows you how bad the Leafs have been.

Another chapter will be written in the Canada-Russia rivalry on the ice. The two teams will meet for gold at the World Hockey Championship on Sunday. There's very little interest from yours truly on this event. When you don't have the actual best playing for their countries because of the Stanley Cup playoffs, it waters down the event. However, if I could have convinced Tracey that we should have gone to Switzerland to visit her best friend, I would have been all over this seeing I wouldn't have been that far from Berne.

The Humboldt Broncos will meet Vernon in the RBC Cup final. The Broncos beat Victoria 3-2 in a semi-final game last night that came very close to going to double overtime. The Broncos getting a goal from Shawn Hunter at the 19:57 mark of the first overtime to send Humboldt to the final. You may remember in the round-robin, the Broncos scored with just one second to go in regulation to beat Victoria so it was a double dose of pain for the host team courtesy the SJHL champs.

More Saskatchewan talent on the Riders. The team signing former Rams defensive back Joel Lipinski to a contract. Lipinski had been playing for St. Mary's after leaving the Rams to go play junior ball in BC. Add his name to the list of players from Saskatchewan who will be at training camp and add his name to the list of players who will compete at the one cornerback spot as Ken Miller has said he wants to try a Canadian there opposite Omarr Morgan on the other side. Lipinski is a good one. He should be able to compete and perhaps even land a spot as the team's nickel or dime back.

Welcome back!! Alex Rodriguez sees the first pitch he sees in 2009 and deposits it over the wall for a three run homer as the Yankees beat Baltimore 4-0. How happy do you think A-Rod is now that the heat is being turned up on Manny Ramirez!
