CFL POTW--Week 7

Jon Cornish, J.C Sherritt and Larry Taylor were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for Week 7, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Calgary Stampeders tailback Jon Cornish double dipped in Week 7, earning the Offensive and Canadian Player of the Week awards. Cornish rebounded nicely from a sub-par performance in Week 5, registering a combined 217 yards, en-route to leading the Stampeders to a 31-20 road win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The New Westminster, B.C. native racked up 170 rushing yards and a touchdown on 20 attempts, also registering 47 yards on six receptions.

It's the second time this season that Cornish has been named the Canadian Player of the Week, and the first time since Week 14 of last season that he has earned the Offensive Player of the Week.

J.C. Sherritt continued his strong start to the season in Week 7, collecting his third Defensive Player of the Week award for his performance in Edmonton's 28-20 win over the Roughriders.

Sherritt registered a game-high seven tackles on Friday night, and also had a key interception with 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter to seal Edmonton's fourth win of the year.

The 2011 Most Outstanding Rookie nominee currently leads the CFL in tackles with 48.

Finally, Stampeders kick returner Larry Taylor is the Special Teams Player of the Week. Taylor racked up 172 combined return yards in Week 7, adding to his already league-leading total.

The five-year CFL veteran returned four kickoffs for 84 yards, in addition to his eight punt returns for 88 yards.

It's the second time this season he has been named Special Teams Player of the Week.

Cornish over Sheets? I guess you have to win to be considered and NOT be a Rider.
