Women's Hockey – The Cougars took five out of a possible six points over the
weekend at Manitoba with twin 1-0 victories powered by the netminding of Jane
Kish, who was named the Canada West Second Star of the Week after registering
24-save and 26-save shutouts. Paige Hubbard scored the game-winning goal on
Friday, while Tamara McVannel notched the winning goal in overtime on Saturday.
The Cougars (2-6-2-0) are back at home this weekend to host No. 9-ranked
Alberta on Friday night (7:00) and Saturday afternoon (3:00) at The
Co-operators Centre.
Men's Basketball – The Cougars ended up with a road split with Mount Royal,
losing 96-87 on Thursday but throttling MRU by a 101-59 score on Friday. Carter
Millar was named the Canada West Second Star of the Week after getting
double-doubles in both games, collecting 26 points and 17 rebounds on Thursday
and 17 points and 11 rebounds on Friday. The Cougars (1-3) host Winnipeg this
Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport with
tip-off set for 8:00 both nights.
Women's Basketball – Regina ended up with a weekend split at Mount Royal in a
rare Thursday/Friday series in Calgary. The Cougars won 67-52 in the first game
of the weekend series, but lost 71-68 to MRU on Friday night. The Cougars (1-3)
are back at home this weekend with two games against Winnipeg at the CKHS. Game
time is scheduled for 6:00 on both Friday night and Saturday night.
Men's Hockey – The Cougars played two tight games with Manitoba last
weekend at The Co-operators Centre, falling 4-3 in overtime on Friday before
collecting a 3-2 shootout win over the Bisons on Saturday afternoon. Ben
Duperreault and Isaac Schacher both scored in Saturday's shootout, while
Brandon Holtby made 29 saves in regulation and overtime before stopping both of
Manitoba's attempts in the shootout. The Cougars will hit the road to Edmonton
this weekend for games against No. 1-ranked Alberta on Friday night and
Saturday night.
Women's Volleyball – The Cougars lost a pair of four-set decisions to Manitoba
last weekend at the CKHS, falling 3-1 to the Bisons on both Friday and
Saturday. The Canada West schedule continues for the U of R this weekend as the
Cougars will travel to Kamloops, B.C. for Friday and Saturday matches that will
both start at noon Pacific time.
Cross
Country – Three Cougars finished off their
season at the U SPORTS Cross Country Championships hosted by Queen's on
Saturday at Fort Henry in Kingston, Ont. Kaylee Tymo was the top finisher for
the U of R, ending up in 84th place with an 8K time of 31:02. Matthew Johnson
ran in his final U SPORTS meet and placed 91st with a 10K time of 33:40, while
Sarah Novakowski ran with Tymo on the women's side and finished 135th (32:27)
in her first national meet.
