--The Washington Capitals raised the Stanley Cup banner and then proceeded to lay a beatdown on the Boston Bruins as the NHL season started. After watching the franchise's first Cup banner ascend to the rafters, the Alex Ovechkin-led Capitals scored two goals in the first two minutes on the way to a 7-0 thrashing of the Bruins. T.J. Oshie opened the scoring 24 seconds in and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the first of his two goals at 1:47 to give Washington the fastest first two goals by a defending champion in a season opener in NHL history.
--The Capitals played the game without Tom Wilson and they will play the next 19 without him as well. Wilson was suspended 20 games for his blind-side head shot to Oskar Sundqvist of the Blues on the weekend. This is the fourth suspension for Wilson in a span of 105 games played – and the second straight season opener he has sat out. He went just 15 games between suspensions after a three-game ban for shattering the jaw of Pittsburgh’s Zach Aston-Reese in the second round of last year’s playoff run.
--Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer in the first inning to send the New York Yankees on their way to a 7-2 win over Oakland in the American League wild-card game. It sets up the first Yankees-Red Sox playoff meeting since 2004.
-- The Chicago Cubs expect to make changes after an early playoff exit. Just not in the manager's office. Joe Maddon will return as skipper for a fifth season, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said Wednesday.Chicago finished 95-68 this season, blowing a five-game lead over Milwaukee in the NL Central before losing a tiebreaker to the Brewers for the division title at Wrigley Field. Chicago was eliminated by Colorado with a 2-1, 13-inning defeat in the NL wild-card game at home Tuesday.
--The Edmonton Eskimos expect receiver Duke Williams to play Monday against the Riders. The CFL's leading receiver suffered a shoulder injury in Saturday's loss to the Bombers.
--The Kelowna Rockets have been named the host team for the 2020 Memorial Cup presented by KIA. They beat out Lethbridge and Kamloops. This year's Memorial Cup goes in Halifax,

Capitals don't look like they've skipped a beat. Thought they'd have a Stanley Cup hangover (figuratively and literally), but nope.
