A night on the town can leave many people as impaired the next morning as they were the night before. Pounding headaches, nausea, weakness and slower brain functions are enough for anyone to feel like calling in sick.
But researchers in the U.K. have found a cure, or so they say. The miracle relief for the common hangover apparently comes in the form of a bacon sandwich.
“Bingeing on alcohol depletes brain neurotransmitters but bacon, which is rich in protein, contains amino acids that top these up and make you feel better,” Elin Roberts at Newcastle University told the Times newspaper.
Even famed British chef Jamie Oliver got on the bandwagon, telling the newspaper that when he's hungover, "I wouldn’t normally go for fried stuff, but in the case of a hangover I recommend a double portion of eggs and bacon."
The researchers behind the study even found scientific reasons behind the tantalizing smell bacon releases as it cooks.
“If you’ve got amino acids and reducing sugars at a heat above 150 degrees centigrade, it kickstarts the Maillard
Reaction in the pan. That means lots of lovely smells are released and it’s this which draws us in. I know of three vegetarians who have been broken by the smell of bacon.”
But as with most things, prevention is the only real cure.
Most hangover symptoms fall in line with dehydration and lack of sleep. Sleep well, drink a tall glass of water before bed and eat a good breakfast when you wake up.
If you know it's going to be rough the next day, some experts have even suggested taking an ibuprofen before bed: hitting the headache before it has a chance to form.
