Women’s Volleyball – The Cougars (6-8) played a full 10 sets of volleyball
last weekend in Saskatoon, losing in five sets to Saskatchewan on Friday but
winning in five on Saturday to salvage a crucial Canada West weekend split.
Still deadlocked in a three-way tie for the eighth postseason spot in the
conference, the Cougars will now prepare for two home matches against one of
the teams they’re tied with. Regina and Thompson Rivers (6-8) will meet on
Friday night (6:00) and Saturday night (7:00) at the Centre for Kinesiology,
Health & Sport.
Men’s Volleyball – The Cougars opened up the second half of the Canada West
schedule on the road in Saskatoon, but lost in four sets on both Friday and
Saturday to provincial-rival Saskatchewan. Regina (1-13) is at home this
weekend against Thompson Rivers (3-11), with the two teams set to meet at the
CKHS on Friday night (8:00) and Saturday night (5:00).
Men’s Hockey – The Cougars dropped two home contests against MRU on the
weekend, falling 8-2 on Friday night before suffering a 4-2 defeat on Saturday
afternoon. Regina will return home and look to right the ship against the 8-9-1
UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night and Saturday night, with both games set for a
7:00 puck drop at The Co-operators Centre.
Women’s Basketball (U SPORTS
Ranking: No. 3) – The Cougars kicked off the second
half of the Canada West schedule with a pair of big wins over Mount Royal,
including a 101-31 thrashing on Friday night that went down as the largest
victory in program history. Now 11-1 on the season, the U of R will hit the
road this weekend for
Men’s Basketball – The Cougars returned to Canada West play with a home
split last weekend against Mount Royal, losing on Friday but recovering for a
107-91 win on Saturday night. Regina is now 8-4 on the season and ranked third
in the conference in RPI, and continues Canada West play this weekend with two
games against an Alberta Golden Bears squad that sports the best record in the
league at 11-1.
Women’s Hockey – The Cougars are coming off a tough weekend at Mount Royal
that saw two shutout wins for MRU goalie Zoe De Beauville. Regina (6-9-1-2)
will look to rebound on the road this weekend with Friday evening and Saturday
afternoon matchups against the second-place UBC Thunderbirds.
Wrestling (Women’s U SPORTS Ranking:
No. 4 / Men’s U SPORTS Ranking: No. 9)
– The men’s team competed at the Ridgewater Open in Willmar, Minn. last
weekend, with Jordan Tholl finishing fourth in his weight class as the
highest-placing Cougar. The women’s team was also in action for a pair of
midweek duals in Montana, with the Cougars taking 38-6 and 23-19 victories over
Providence and Southern Oregon, respectively. Both teams will be in action this
weekend at the Golden Bear Invitational in Edmonton.
Swimming (Women’s U SPORTS Ranking:
No. 7 / Men’s U SPORTS Ranking: No. 8)
– Five members of the U of R’s men’s team will be in action this weekend at the
Arena Pro Swim Series event in Austin, Texas. Noah Choboter, Jean-Philippe
Dufresne, Brian Palaschuk, Etienne Paquin-Foisy, and Noah Wasyliw will all
compete at the long-course meet, which will be hosted at the University of
Texas’ swimming facility.
Track & Field – Six weeks after participating in the Larmer Friendship
Games, the Cougars finally return to competition this weekend in Saskatoon with
the Downtown Lions Sled Dog Meet on Friday and Saturday. It’ll be the first of
three January meets for the Cougars, who are also scheduled to compete in the
Golden Bear Open (Edmonton) and the Knights of Columbus Indoor Games
(Saskatoon) this month.
