Jacob Trouba was traded to the New York Rangers by the Winnipeg Jets on Monday for Neal Pionk and a first-round pick (No. 20) in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Trouba led Jets defensemen with an NHL career-high 50 points (eight goals, 42 assists) in 82 games this season and had one assist in six Stanley Cup Playoff games. The 25-year-old can become a restricted free agent July 1.
Trouba was awarded a one-year, $5.5 million contract in arbitration prior to this season. Selected by Winnipeg with the No. 9 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, he has 179 points (42 goals, 137 assists) in 408 NHL games.
Winnipeg regained the pick it sent New York on Feb. 25 in a trade for forward Kevin Hayes, who was traded by the Jets to the Philadelphia Flyers on June 3.
Pionk had 26 points (six goals, 20 assists) in 73 games for the Rangers this season and led their defensemen in power-play points with 13. The 23-year-old, who agreed to terms with New York as a free agent May 1, 2017, following two seasons with the University of Minnesota Duluth, has 40 points (seven goals, 33 assists) in 101 NHL games.

Wow, Jets fleeced. But so many players don't want to live and play in Winnipeg or Edmonton
Interesting take by anon 1.
Winnipeg gets the first round pick back they gave to the Rangers for Hayes, the Jets have other contracts to make up and knew they likely weren't going to keep Trouba.
Yes, they could have gotten more, but you could say that in just about any deal.
When the team is winning, you want to live and play there.
