This becomes an issue it seems every year during the Stanley Cup playoffs and it is happening once again. Habs coach and GM Bob Gainey is asking fans of his hockey team to not boo the American national anthem when it is played like it was on Monday night before Game 3 of the Habs-Bruins series. I understand there is acrimony towards the United States but really what kind of knuckledragger are you, what kind of moron are you. What would prompt you to stand and boo the anthem of a country---a country that some of your players call home. I'm sure guys like Chris Higgins and Mike Komisarek and Matt Schneider who were all born in the US are real appreciative of this move. I'm sure now this will prompt Boston fans into having to boo "O Canada" when its played before Game 5 if there is one. Perhaps St. Louis fans will decide to boo the anthem to pay disrespect to the Canucks much to the chagrin of all the Canadians who are employed by the Blues organization.
There are some out there who question why the national anthem is played before a sporting event especially at a hockey game when several different nationalities are being represented. I am one that believes an anthem should be played and that people should be respectful during that anthem (that includes the idiots in Calgary who had the horns last night or those that start yelling or screaming before the final bars are completed) but maybe it is time that the game just begin. That opens up a whole new can of worms doesn't it!
